Women's Basketball Falls to Richmond, 63-50, in A-10 Play

Richmond, Va. - The Fordham women's basketball team fell to Richmond, 63-50, on Sunday, in an Atlantic 10 game played at the Robins Center in Richmond, Virginia. Three Rams players reached double figures in scoring, led by Charlotte Stoddart with 14 points.

The Rams came out of the gate on fire, nailing five of their first six shots to take a 13-8 lead. Stoddart accounted for the first five points of the game for Fordham with the other eight points coming from an Arielle Collins three, a Becky Peters trifecta and an Abigail Corning jumper.

After a Genevieve Okoro basket, Corning nailed another three-pointer at 13:28, that gave Fordham it's largest lead of the game, 16-10.

The Spiders rattled off the next six points to even the score at 16 at 8:46 and eventually regained the lead and pushed the advantage to five points, 24-19, on a Liz Brown jumper at 6:14.

The Rams scored the next five points to draw even once again as Peters connected on a three and followed that with a jumper to make the score 24-24 at 4:45.

Richmond countered with an 8-0 run over the final few minutes to take a 32-24 lead at the half.

The second stanza began with Richmond slowly extending the lead to eleven points, as Abbey Oliver scored two of her game-high 23, at 14:10, to make the score 40-29.

Fordham slowly chipped away at the Richmond lead as Stoddart eventually hit a bucket at 9:35 to draw the Rams within six, at 46-40. After the Spiders pushed the lead back to ten points, 52-42, Corning rattled off five straight points for Fordham and the Rams got within five, 52-47, with 3:56 remaining.

The closing minutes of the game saw Richmond push the lead up to as many as 16 points until a half court shot by Collins went in as the final buzzer sounded, and the Spiders walked away with a 63-50 victory.

With the loss, Fordham is now 11-16 overall and 2-10 in the A-10. Richmond improved to 21-6, 8-4 in the league.

Corning finished with 13 points on 5-of-10 shooting, while Collins chipped in with 11. Stoddart shot 6-of-9 from the field in the game.

Fordham returns to action on Wednesday, February 22, when they travel to Olean, New York, for an A-10 matchup with #21 St. Bonaventure. The game with the Bonnies begins at 7:00 PM. After that, the Rams close out their 2011-12 regular season schedule with a home game against Saint Louis on Sunday, February 26th at 2:00 p.m. The game with the Billikins will be Senior Day for Fordham.

Game Notes: Coach Gaitley returned to Richmond for the first time as Fordham head coach... She was the head coach at Richmond from 1985-90 and amassed a 116-63 record...The Rams outscored the Spiders 8-5 off of turnovers.
