Despite having two players tie season-high scoring efforts on Tuesday night, Fordham dropped a decision to Yale, 67-53, in John J. Lee Ampitheater. With the loss, the Rams fall to 5-3 on the year while the Bulldogs improve to 2-6.
Junior guard Erin Rooney could do no wrong for the Rams in the game's opening minutes. She made four of her first six attempts from the field, including two three-pointers, en route to registering ten of the team's first 12 points.
The Rams and Elis traded leads throughout the first half, with Fordham holding an advantage as large as seven, 21-14, after a Rooney layup with just under seven minutes to go. Yale then rattled off a 7-0 run over the next two plus minutes, tying the game at 21.
The teams traded buckets over the remainder of the half, and the Bulldogs entered the intermission with a 31-29 lead.
Rooney finished the first half with 12 points on 5-9 shooting, including 2-3 from deep. Freshman Samantha Clark also had an outstanding opening half for the Rams. The Neptune, New Jersey native scored seven points, including her first collegiate three-pointer.
Despite Fordham forcing 11 turnovers and taking 12 more field goal attempts in the first half than the Bulldogs, Yale lived up to its reputation as a stellar shooting team, converting on 52 percent of their tries from the field in the opening stanza.
Yale maintained their hot hand in the opening minutes of the second half, making their first three shots from downtown.
The deficit remained within single digits for the Rams over the first thirteen minutes of the second half, but Yale's impressive perimeter shooting soon put the game out of reach.
The Bulldogs finished the game at an even 50 percent from both the floor and downtown, and they converted on 10-11 tries from the charity stripe.
For the Rams, Rooney and Clark both tied season-highs with 15 and 11 points, respectively. Her 15 point effort marked the eighth time in eight games this season that Rooney has reached double figures. However, the team's other double digit scoring streak came to an end, as Marah Strickland fell just short of the mark with nine points. She had scored at least ten points in all six of her appearances heading into Tuesday.
The Rams return to the Rose Hill Gym for a long home stretch beginning Saturday, December 8th, when they host the Stony Brook Seawolves at 2 PM.
