Nov. 4, 2012 - Providence, R.I. - The Fordham water polo team looked to end their season on a high note on Sunday, as the Rams faced off against their longtime rival, Iona College, in the fifth place game at the Northern Division Championship in Providence, Rhode Island. The Rams would build up an 8-4 lead in the fourth quarter, but a late surge by Iona forced overtime in which the Gaels pulled out a 12-10 victory.
The loss ends Fordham's season at 7-20.
The two teams were even at two after the first quarter, before Fordham took control with a three-goal second quarter to lead 5-2 at the half. Nicholas Allen netted an extra-man goal in the first minute of the quarter, while Davis DeFontes scored twice late in the period for a 5-2 lead.
The Rams added to their lead in the third quarter, when Ben Clinkinbeard and Daniel Barron both scored to make it a 7-2 score. A late plenty goal by Iona left Fordham with a 7-3 lead, entering the fourth quarter.
After exchanging goals to make it 8-4, Iona scored four times over the final 5:16 of the game, which included the game-tying goal with 15 seconds left to force overtime.
In overtime, each team scored in the opening minute, but Iona would score twice more to lead after the first three-minute session, 11-9. In the second session of overtime, Barron netted an early marker for the Rams to pull Fordham within one, but an Iona tally with 19 seconds left sealed the Gaels victory by a score of 12-10.
For Fordham, DeFontes, Allen, and Barron each had two goals apiece, while Bobby Wurtz, Clinkinbeard, Alex Judge, and Patrick Lenihan had one goal each.
