Women's Basketball Tops Dowling, 60-43, in Exhibition Contest

Bronx, N.Y. - Fordham fans got treated to a preview of the Fordham women's basketball team on Saturday, as the Rams took on the Dowling Golden Lions at the Rose Hill Gym. Fordham gave the fans plenty to cheer about, racking up a 60-43 exhibition win over Dowling.

Fordham showed more up tempo play, getting out on the fast break numerous times throughout the contest, finishing with a 13-0 advantage in fast break points.

The Rams opened the contest hitting three three-pointers over the first seven minutes, two by Marah Strickland and one by Erin Rooney to build up a 13-7 edge. Dowling hung around for most of the first half, courtesy of a 52% shooting effort and getting 10 points and six rebounds from Danielle Wilson to trail by two, 26-22, with 4:46 remaining.

The Golden Lions were then down by only one, 26-25, following a three-pointer by Christine Verrelle. The Rams though closed out the period with an 8-2 run to lead by seven at the break, 34-27, as Strickland and Arielle Collins both hit shots from three-point range, while Emily Tapio added a lay-up.

Strickland led all scorers at the half with 13 points on 5-of-8 shooting with Samantha Clark adding six points and six boards off the bench for the Rams.

Fordham got out of the gates quickly in the second half, scoring the first 10 points, which including four by Charlotte Stoddart to lead, 44-27. The Rams extended the lead to 21, 53-32, on Strickland's fourth three-pointer of the game with 9:33 left, and led by as many as 22 in the second half.

Fordham clamped down defensively in the second half, forcing 12 turnovers and allowing just 16 points to the Golden Lions. Dowling shot just 4-for-20 from the field in the second half, and 1-for-6 from three-point range.

For Fordham, Strickland led the Rams with 16 points on 6-of-12 shooting, while Rooney chipped in nine points, five rebounds, and four assists. Collins also added nine points, four rebounds, and three steals with Clark having eight points, nine rebounds, and three blocks.

Dowling was led by Wilson, who finished with a game-high 17 points and eight rebounds.

The Fordham women's basketball team will now open its 2012-13 regular season on Friday, November 9th, when the Rams travel to Albany to meet the Great Danes at 8:30 PM.
