Volleyball Falls at George Washington

Washington, D.C. - Featuring two of the top hitters in the Atlantic 10 in Fordham's Lisa Hipp and George Washington's Lauren Whyte, it was Whyte's match-high 17 kills that proved to be the difference in Friday night's match between the Colonials and the Rams, as George Washington swept the match in three sets. Final set scores were 25-23, 25-17, and 25-20.

With the loss, Fordham falls to 13-18 overall, 5-7 in the Atlantic 10, while George Washington improved to 10-16 overall, 7-5 in the league.

Set one saw the Colonials pull out to a 14-7 lead at the midway point, but the resilient Rams rallied to tie the score at 18 all. George Washington pulled back ahead by two at 23-21, but a kill from Lisa Hipp and a block by Randi Ewing and Lindsay Ritchie knotted the score at 23 apiece. The Colonials then got set point on a kill from Lauren Whyte and won the set, 25-23, on a Fordham attack error.

The second set saw the Colonials click on all cylinders offensively, as George Washington hit .481, led by seven kills from Whyte, in an eight-point set win.

Set three saw ten tie scores and six lead changes, as Fordham tried to get back into the match. The final tie was at 18 all after a kill by Fordham's Ewing, but the Colonials scored seven of the next nine points to win the set, 25-20, and the match, three sets to none.

For Fordham, Hipp led the way with 13 kills and seven digs, while Ewing had nine kills and four blocks. Sara Konkel recorded her ninth double-double of the season with 32 assists and 12 digs to go with three blocks. Defensively, Maria Rodenberg had a match-high 18 digs with Michele Keathley adding 11 digs.

The Fordham volleyball team will next be in action on Sunday, November 4th, when the Rams travel to Duquesne for a 1:00 PM match.
