Coming into this season's home opener against Delaware State, it had been nearly 20 years since the Fordham Women's Basketball squad opened a campaign with a 3-0 record. The Rams matched that mark in a convincing fashion Sunday afternoon, downing the Hornets 69-38 in the Rose Hill Gym.
With the win the Rams move to 3-0 on the season, while the loss drops Delaware State to 0-3.
Fordham came out of the gate firing on Sunday afternoon, tallying the game's first eight points. Charlotte Stoddart opened up the scoring for the Rams, connecting on a three-pointer from the top of the key on Fordham's first offensive possession of the game. The Rams didn't take the foot off the pedal soon after that. An Erin Rooney layup opened up a 22-2 advantage midway through the opening half, capping off a 14-0 run for the home team.
It didn't take Rooney long to get acclimated to the friendly confines of the Rose Hill Gym. The junior transfer student from New Zealand scored five of Fordham's first ten points, including an unassisted slash to the basket to put the Rams ahead 10-2 with 13:42 left in the half. She scored nine points and grabbed four rebounds in the opening stanza. Graduate student Marah Strickland also had a superb first half in her home debut in a Rams uniform, registering a team high 11 points and pulling down five boards.
Junior guard Abigail Corning did it all for the Rams in the first half. The Wethersfield, CT native scored four points while collecting six boards and dishing out five assists.
Fordham also dominated the hustle points in the opening stanza, collecting seven offensive rebounds and turning those into ten second chance points. Overall, the Rams out-boarded the Hornets by a 25-9 margin in the first half. The Rams led 37-20 at the intermission.
The second half was much of the same for Fordham. Up 48-28 with just over 11 minutes left on the clock, the Rams began a 10-0 run with the help of three-pointers from
Marah Strickland and
Abigail Corning to put the game safely out of reach. The Hornets never got within 26 points of the lead following the run.
Corning led the way for the Rams, registering nine points while pulling down nine boards and dishing out a career-high seven helpers.
Strickland led all Fordham scorers, tallying 16 points in her Rose Hill debut. Strickland was one of three Rams in double figures on Sunday, as freshman Samantha Clark scored ten points and junior Erin Rooney netted 11. All three double digit scorers were playing in their first regular season home game in a Fordham uniform.
Sophomore guard Taryn Durant recorded a career-high seven rebounds to go along with six points.
The Rams dominated on the glass throughout the game, outrebounding Delaware State by a 47-28 margin. Included in those 47 boards were 19 on the offensive glass, which the Rams turned into 20 second chance points. Fordham also excelled at getting the ball inside on Sunday afternoon, outscoring the Hornets 34-18 in the paint.
The Rams held Delaware State to only 28 percent from the floor, and it was the first time since holding Stony Brook to 39 a season ago that the Rams held an opponent to fewer than 40 points.
The Rams' 19 assists were the most for the team since February of 2011.
The Fordham women's basketball team will next be in action Wednesday, November 21st when the Rams travel to the West Coast to take on the University of San Francisco Dons at 10:00 PM ET.
