Entering Saturday's showdown with Rhode Island, the Fordham volleyball team had another opportunity to get to the .500 mark for the first time this season with a win. A win would also give Fordham its best-ever start in A-10 play at 4-1. By match's end, both statements would ring true, as Fordham topped Rhode Island in four sets at Keaney Gymnasium in Kingston, Rhode Island.
Final set scores were 25-17, 16-25, 25-15, and 25-19.
The win moved Fordham to 12-12 overall this season, having won three straight matches and nine of its last 12, while also putting Fordham at 4-1 in league play for the first time ever. Previously, Fordham's best start through five matches was 3-2 on multiple occasions. The loss put Rhode Island at 6-12 on the year, 2-3 in the Atlantic 10.
The first set saw the score knotted at five, before Fordham took control of the opening set with a 10-3 surge, led by two kills each from Randi Ewing, Carina Thompson, and Brianna O'Neil. Fordham would cruise from there, holding Rhode Island to a .111 hitting percentage for the set.
Rhode Island pushed back in set two, recording a string of nine straight points en route to a 25-16 set win, and evening the match at one set apiece.
Set three was again tight early with the score tied at six, when Ewing recorded three consecutive blocks for Fordham, to give the Rams a lead they would not relinquish. Fordham hit just a shade under .300 for the set, as O'Neil netted five kills with Thompson and Lisa Hipp each having four.
The fourth set came down to a quick five-point spurt by Fordham with the score tied at 16. Fordham got two kills from Thompson and Hipp, while getting two points on URI errors and a service ace to build up a 21-16 lead, and eventually a six-point set win.
For Fordham, Hipp registered a match-high 17 kills to go with nine digs, while O'Neil recorded her third double-double of the season with 13 kills and 10 digs. Thompson also chipped in 11 kills with Ewing adding nine kills and five blocks. Sara Konkel dished out 48 assists with five digs and three blocks, while Maria Rodenberg had a match-high 15 digs defensively.
The Fordham volleyball team will next be in action on Friday, October 12th, when the Rams travel to Dayton, Ohio for an Atlantic 10 match-up against the Flyers, beginning at 7:00 PM.
