Philadelphia, Pa. -
When Fordham and La Salle squared off tonight in Atlantic 10 men's soccer action it was the battle of two of the top defensive teams in the conference. So it came as no surprise that scoring would be hard to come by but the Explorers managed to sneak one into the Fordham net in the first overtime for a 1-0 win over the Rams in the A-10 opener for each squad.
With the loss, Fordham evens its record at 4-4-1 on the year while La Salle improves to 7-2-2.
On the game-winner, which came just over six minutes into the extra session, Joe Farrell got off a shot for the Explorers that was blocked but Jidell Roach got the rebounds and slid it past Fordham keeper Sean Brailey to end the game. It was the only shot of the overtime.
La Salle controlled play in the first half, outshooting the Rams 5-2 over the first 45 minutes. But it was Fordham who had the first scoring chance as in the fifth minute, Kyle Bitterman got his head on the ball but La Salle keeper John McCarthy was able to make the save.
In the ninth minute, La Salle had its first scoring opportunity but Brailey was up to the task on a Farrell shot on net as he was on a Farrell shot in the 24th minute.
The second half was evenly played, with the Explorers holding an 8-7 advantage in shots with five of the eight shot being on net. But Brailey was able to keep La Salle off the scoreboard, stopping all five scoring chances, including two in the final six minutes of regulation.
Kalle Sotka had both shots on net for the Rams in the second half.
Brailey finished with seven saves for the Rams while McCarthy made three in net for the Explorers.
The Rams will return to action next Friday, October 12th, as they travel to Charlotte, N.C., to face the Charlotte 49ers, an NCAA finalist last year, in an Atlantic 10 match at 7:00 p.m.
