After opening the season with a strong defensive effort, the Fordham University men's soccer squad has endured a reversal of fortunes over the past two games, as the Rams fell to Temple, 2-0, in an Atlantic 10 match on Jack Coffey Field tonight.
With the loss, Fordham falls to 5-6-3 overall, 1-3-2 in the Atlantic 10, while Temple improves to 8-5-3 overall, 4-1-2 in the conference.
Prior to the game, former Fordham keeper and current New York Red Bull keeper, Ryan Meara, was on hand to donate a signed Red Bull jersey to the Rams.
The Owls got on the board early, scoring in the 15th minute when Cody Calafiore took a corner that was flicked by Homero Rodriguez to Jared Martinelli who headed it past Fordham keeper Sean Brailey for his team-leading eighth goal of the year.
Temple kept the offensive pressure on the Rams in the first half, outshooting Fordham 8-3 over the initial 45 minutes, and got the second goal just before halftime. On the second tally, Vaughn Spurrier played a through ball to Jake Lister who beat Brailey to the upper left corner for his first goal of the year in the 41st minute.
The Owls almost pick up a third goal in the first half but Brailey was able to deflect a shot from Rodriguez less than a minute after the Lister goal and then the Fordham defense blocked a Spurrier shot in the 44th minute.
The Rams battled back in the second half, getting three shots on goal but Temple keeper Dan Scheck was able to keep all three out of net and he got some help from a keeper best friend when Taylor Gulbins got off a blast in the 58th minute that hit the cross bar and bounced away. Two of Scheck's three second half saves came in the final two minutes and both were off the foot of Eric Walano, who was looking for his first goal of the season for the Rams.
Fordham switched keepers at the half and new keeper Ricky Berotti was tested in the second half, making three saves to keep it a two-goal game.
The Rams return to action on Sunday, October 28th, as they host the Saint Joseph's University Hawks in an Atlantic 10 match on Jack Coffey Field at 1:00 PM.
