Storrs, Conn. - (Oct. 20, 2012) - The Fordham swimming & diving team got its 2012-13 season underway on Saturday at UConn's Wolff-Zackin Natatorium. Though a change in format moved it from an invitational to a tri-meet with Bucknell and Connecticut, the Rams still had a good showing with ten event wins, which included one pool record.
The Fordham women split their tri-meet, defeating Bucknell, 173.5-125.5, and falling to Connecticut, 162-143.
Senior Brienne Ryan led the way individually, as she won both the 100- and 200-yard backstroke events, setting a new pool record in the 100-yard event (55.38), while posting a time of 2:02.68 in the 200-yard event. Ryan was also a part of both winning women's relays, as the 200 medley relay team won their event in 1:47.96 and the 400 freestyle relay team placed first in 3:32.85.
Freshman Shannon Lulley also had an impressive first meet, winning the 100-yard butterfly in 58.85 seconds, while grabbing second in the 50-yard freestyle (25.04) and third in the 200-yard individual medley (2:11.55).
Besides Ryan and Lulley, Fordham's final event winner on the women's side was Frances Warren, as she took the 200-yard butterfly event in 2:07.46.
Other top performers included Alana Biagioli, who was second in the 100-yard freestyle (53.26) and third in the 200-yard freestyle (1:55.78), Kara Field, who was fourth in the 1000-yard freestyle (10:33.98), Megan Gehrich, who was second in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:08.18), Anna Marshall, who was second in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:26.56), and Megan Zarriello, who placed third in the 500-yard freestyle (5:10.44).
The Fordham men's teams lost both ends of their tri-meet, falling to Connecticut, 187-111, and to Bucknell, 175-135.
The top performers on the men's side included Shintaro Noguchi and newcomer Steve Sholdra. Noguchi won both the 200-yard freestyle (1:42.67) and the 100-yard butterfly (50.02), while Sholdra placed first in both the 1000-yard freestyle (9:24.02) and 500-yard freestyle (4:37.12) and took second in the 200-yard butterfly (1:54.82).
Thomas Yi also had two top three finishes, as he took second in the 200-yard backstroke (1:54.66) and third in the 100-yard backstroke (53.26). Devon Morris also had a solid showing, taking second in the 50-yard freestyle (21.58) and fourth in the 100-yard event (47.76).
Other top performers included Zach Jacobsen, who was fifth in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:15.07) and seventh in the 200-yard individual medley (1:59.69), and Kevin Wong, who was fourth in the one-meter dive with a score of 214.25 and sixth in the three-meter dive (190.04).
In relay action, the men's 200 medley relay team was third in 1:36.84, while the 400 freestyle relay was also third in 3:11.32.
The Fordham swimming & diving teams will next be in action on Thursday, October 25th, as the Rams host Marist College for the team's home opener at 6:00 PM.
