Bronx, N.Y. - After opening the Atlantic 10 season with a 4-1 record, the Fordham University volleyball squad ventured out to Ohio last week and returned with a pair of losses. The Rams were hoping to reverse those fortunes tonight as they hosted Temple University but the Owls had other ideas, coming back from a 2-1 deficit to defeat the Rams 3-2 in the Rose Hill Gym. Scores of the sets were 25-17, 22-25, 19-25, 26-24 and 15-11.

With the loss, Fordham falls to 12-15 overall, 4-4 in the Atlantic 10, while Temple improves to 15-7 overall, 5-3 in the conference.

The Rams fell despite an 18-kill, 13-dig performance from Lisa Hipp as well as a 49-assist and 21-dig game from Sara Konkel.

The Owls took the first game, hitting .370 in the set, while holding Fordham to a .037 hitting percentage. Fordham jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the set before Temple came back to knot the score at three. The set would be tied five more times, the final time at 11-11, following a Gabriella Matautia kill for Temple. The Owls then scored six of the next eight points to take a 17-13 lead before a Carina Thompson kill got Fordham to within three. But Temple scored eight of the final 14 points, the final on a Matautia kill for the 25-19 win.

Set two saw Fordham improve its hitting percentage to .225 with 16 kills but it was Temple who took an early 5-1 lead. The Rams responded with three straight points to make it a one-point game, 5-4, on an attack error and Fordham would tie the game at seven thank to a Lindsay Ritchie kill, the first of six ties in the set. The final tie was at 11-11 when Fordham scored four straight, capped by a Hipp service ace. The 4-0 run gave the Rams the lead for good, though Temple would close to within one, 21-20, on a Fordham attack error. The Rams closed out the match with four of the final five points with Thompson putting the set away with a kill.

The third set was all Fordham as the Rams led from start to finish, hitting .297, though not leading by more than four points until a pair of Hipp kills gave Fordham a 19-14 lead. An attack error helped the Owls pull to within four, 19-15, but Fordham scored two to go up 21-15, the first on a Randi Ewing kill, en route to the 25-19 win.

The fourth set was a hotly contested affair, with seven ties in the set and neither team leading by more than three points. Fordham had a chance to close out the match, leading 24-23, but kills from Lingyu Zhang and Elyse Burkert gave the Owls a 25-24 lead and a Fordham attack error proved to be the difference as Temple forced a fifth set.

Temple controlled the fifth set, taking an early 4-1 lead and then increasing the advantage to 9-3 on a Tiffany Connatser kill. But the Rams battled back, scoring three straight points to pull to within three, 9-6, and Fordham would trail by three again later in the set, 13-10, but an attack error and a Zhang kill over the next three points gave Temple the 15-11 win.

Ewing finished with nine kills, six block assists and one block solo for the Rams while Ritchie added ten kills and 13 digs.

The Rams return to action on Saturday night, October 20, as they host the La Salle University Explorers in an Atlantic 10 match in the Rose Hill Gym at 7:00 p.m.
