The two teams entered the Atlantic 10 men's soccer match tonight with lots of similarities. Both teams were ranked in the latest NSCAA/Continental Tire NCAA Mid-Atlantic poll with VCU being ranked third and Fordham tied for eighth. Both teams had only one conference loss to date and the two teams even share a nickname, the Rams. So it was no surprise that the two schools played to a 1-1 tie on Jack Coffey Field.
With the tie, Fordham goes to 5-4-3 overall, 1-1-2 in the Atlantic 10, while VCU goes to 7-2-4 overall, 3-1-1 in the conference.
Trailing 1-0 in the second half, Julian Nagel got the equalizer for Fordham in the 72nd minute when he took a direct kick from about 23 yards that he ripped by VCU keeper Andrew Wells for his second goal of the year.
Fordham had another scoring chance five minutes later when Ryan Walsh took a shot that was corralled by Wells and VCU also had a late scoring chance but Fordham keeper Sean Brailey was able to save a shot from Mario Herrera Meraz in the 82nd minute.
Both teams had a scoring chance in the first overtime. Fordham's Nathaniel Bekoe had the first one, but his shot in the 95th minute was saved by Wells while Brailey kept a shot from Kharlton Belmar out of the net just about two minutes later.
Neither squad had a shot on net in the second overtime.
VCU had the first scoring opportunity in the game but Brailey kept a Devon Fisher shot from crossing the goal line in the 18th minute and Fordham responded just over a minute later with a scoring chance of its own when a Kyle Bitterman blast was knocked aside by Wells in the 18th minute.
VCU took a 1-0 lead in the 22nd minute as Jason Johnson played a through ball to the wing to Joseph Haboush who was able to get off a shot that hit the cross bar and bounced in past Brailey for his first tally of the year.
Brailey finished with three save in net for Fordham while Wells also made three saves for VCU, who outshot Fordham 15-13 in the game.
Fordham will next be in action on Sunday, October 21, as the Rams host the University of Richmond Spiders in an Atlantic 10 match on Jack Coffey Field at 1:00 p.m.
