Bronx, N.Y. -
With goals in the first ten minutes of both halves, the Fordham women's soccer team looked ready to send off its senior class with a win in their final home game. However, La Salle spoiled those plans, scoring twice in the final five minutes to steal away a 3-2 victory at Jack Coffey Field.
With the loss, Fordham falls to 7-10 overall, 3-4 in the Atlantic 10, while La Salle improved to 13-3 on the year, 7-0 in the league.
The well fought game started with goals by each team in the opening 15 minutes. Fordham scored first in the ninth minute, as Joann Murino took a clear from her defender position and made a long run into La Salle territory. With a 3-on-2 break, Murino dished the ball left to Kristina Maksuti, who ripped home a shot from 18 yards to the upper right corner for her sixth goal of the season.
La Salle tied the game in the 15th minute, as Amanda Komarnicki put in a long cross from the left side toward the far post. Leigh Gray would get a header on it and go off the post and in for her fourth of the season.
Fordham recaptured the lead in the 49th minute, as Victoria Camaj chipped a pass, just over the La Salle backline to Maksuti, who blasted another goal into the upper right corner, this time from 15 yards out.
The score remained in Fordham's favor until the 86th minute, when Courtney Niemiec scored on a rebound shot from seven yards out to knot the game at two. Just 26 seconds after Niemiec's goal, the Explorers struck again, as Renee Washington headed in a Maryam Huseini cross for her sixth goal of the year, which turned out to be the game-winner.
In goal, both Fordham's Rachel Suther and La Salle's Gabby Pakhtigian had three saves in the game.
The Fordham women's soccer team will next be in action on Friday, October 26th, when the Rams travel to Philadelphia to face the Temple Owls at 3:00 PM.
