The bad news for the 2012 Fordham University men's soccer team is that they are having trouble putting the ball in the net. The good news for the 2012 Fordham University men's soccer team is that they are making it difficult for their opponents to do the same as the Rams and Charlotte played to a scoreless tie in an Atlantic 10 match on Transamerica Field.
With the tie, the Rams go to 4-4-2 on the season, 0-1-1 in the Atlantic 10, while Charlotte, who entered the game ranked 22nd in the latest NSCAA poll, goes to 7-2-3 overall, 1-1-1 in the conference.
Sean Brailey was the man of the hour for Fordham, recording six saves to notch his fifth clean sheet of the season, tying him with Charlotte keeper Klay Davis for second in the in the Atlantic 10, and lowering his GAA to a minuscule 0.56.
Despite not having an official shot on goal in the game, Fordham had the first scoring opportunity but a Kalle Sotka shot in the fifth minute was blocked by a 49er defender.
Just over five minutes later, Brailey was saved by a keeper's best friend as Charlotte's Giuseppe Gentile's blast hit the post and bounced away. Bailey was forced to make the first of his six saves, and the only one in the first half, in the 32nd minute on a Tyler Gibson shot.
The 49ers put more pressure on Brailey in the second half, compelling the Fordham keeper to make three saves in the period, including one off Gibson in the 87th minute to keep the game scoreless and send it to extra periods.
Neither squad had a shot on net on the first overtime but in the second ten minutes, Brailey made saves on scoring chances by Thomas Allen in the 102nd minute and by Donnie Smith in the 107th minute to keep the goose egg on the board for the home team.
The Rams will next be in action on Sunday, October 14th, as they face the George Washington University Colonials in Washington, D.C., in an Atlantic 10 matchup at 1:00 p.m.
