Bronx, N.Y. -
Things started out great for the Fordham Rams in Friday's women's soccer game at Jack Coffey Field. The Rams peppered Charlotte early with multiple shots and scored the opening goal of the game. However, two late first half goals and one in the second half would give the 49ers a 3-1 win by night's end.
With the loss, Fordham falls to 6-9-0 overall, 2-3-0 in the Atlantic 10, while Charlotte improved to 10-3-1 on the year, 4-0-0 in the conference.
Fordham tested Charlotte goalkeeper Alex Kubrick early and often in Kubrick's first action off an injury. Kubrick made three saves in the first eight minutes on Fordham, and got help from the crossbar on a Kristina Maksuti shot in the sixth minute.
The Rams tenacity would pay off in the 12th minute. After a foul near the midfield stripe, JoJo Murino put in a free kick into the box. The ball was headed up by a Charlotte player, when Fordham's Kaitlyn Carballeira dashed in and headed in the deflection over Kubrick for her second goal of the season.
The score remained that way until the 36th minute, as a bad clear by the Fordham defense was intercepted by Alex Meyers, who quickly crossed to Amanda Jones, scoring her seventh goal of the season to the far post.
Just over four minutes later, the 49ers took the lead as the same combination of Meyers and Jones hooked up for another goal. This time, Jones put in a chip pass that was headed home by Meyers for a 2-1 lead.
Charlotte would get an insurance marker in the 52nd minute, when Monica Trickett blasted a 20-yard shot right through the hands of Fordham goalkeeper Rachel Suther, just inside the left post.
In net, Kubrik made six saves for the 49ers, while Suther had five stops for the Rams.
The Fordham women's soccer team will next be in action on Sunday, October 14th, when the Rams host George Washington at 1:00 PM on Jack Coffey Field
