Rams Close Out Non-Conference Play with a 63-48 Win over Delaware State

Dover, Del. - The Fordham women's basketball team ended a two-game losing streak by closing out the non-conference portion of the schedule with a 63-48 win over Delaware State on Wednesday in Dover. The Rams improved to 9-6 with the win as Abigail Corningscored a game-high 19 points on 7-of-11 shooting.

In familiar fashion, Fordham fell behind early as the Lady Hornets jumped out to a 6-0 lead in less than three minutes of action. The Rams responded with seven straight points to take a 7-6 lead. The 7-0 run began with a three-pointer from Christina Gaskin, then Charlotte Stoddarthit a jumper, and Gaskin closed out the run with another bucket to make it 7-6 at 15:57.

Delaware State answered with a Tasia Bristow hoop to make it 8-7 for the home team, but Fordham used a 14-7 run over the next 5:58 to build a 22-14 advantage. In that scoring spree Stoddart scored five points, Arielle Collins had four, Corning nailed a three-pointer, and Becky Petershad a basket.

The Rams extended the lead even further as they used the last eight minutes of action to build a 15-point advantage to close out the half.

The second half began with a Lady Hornets' basket to make the score 37-24 for Fordham, and then the Rams rattled off five consecutive points on baskets from Peters and Corning, to give themselves an 18 point lead, 42-24 at 17:14.

Eventually, Fordham made the advantage 19 points, 51-32, when Liz Milnerhit the second of a pair of foul shots at 8:15. Milner finished with eight points.

While the Rams pushed the edge to 19, the Lady Hornets suffered a 6:03 scoring drought as Tierra Hawkins hit a jumper at 14:18 and then they finally scored again when Kianna D'Olivera sank two free throws at 8:15.

Delaware State never threatened again and the Rams went on to the 63-48 win. Peters finished with ten points on 3-of-5 shooting. Stoddart nearly recorded a double-double finishing with nine points and 10 rebounds.

Fordham continues its three-game road trip on Saturday, January 7, when the Rams travel to Washington, D.C., to open Atlantic 10 conference play at George Washington. The game will air live on CBS Sports Network at 5:00 PM.

Game Notes: Becky Peters collected a steal in the game and moved past Suzanne Maguire for 6th place in career thefts with 172...She also moved into 8th place in career starts with 93 as she passed Annie Zopf...Fordham shot 50% from the field for the second time this season (Winthrop on December 17)...The Rams' bench finally outscored the opponents bench as they recorded eleven points to just five from Delaware State...Fordham shot 52.6 % from behind the three-point line...The 9-6 non-conference record is Fordham's best since the 2002-03 season.
