The Fordham swimming & diving team was back in competition on Saturday at the Sonny Werblin Recreation Center for the Rider/Rutgers Tri-Meet. At the end of the day, the Fordham women earned a split, defeating Rider, 216-78, while falling to Rutgers, 180-120, while the men's team lost to Rider, 170-128.
Fordham began the day with a second place finish in the women's 200 medley relay event. The women's team of Brienne Ryan, Courtney Collyer, Kelly Bunster and Alana Biagioli took second in 1:47.94, while the men's team of Thomas Yi, Joe Hines, Shintaro Noguchi, and Devon Morris placed third in about 1:36.50.
The Rams came up with runner-up finishes in the 1000 freestyle event as well. Kara Field was second in the women's event, posting a season-best time of 10:23.83 with Andrew Hendrickson taking second in the men's event in 9:55.57.
Fordham's first event win came in the 200 freestyle event, where Noguchi won the men's event in 1:42.64, while Alexandra Wessel was the top finisher in the women's event, taking second in 1:54.69.
Next up was the 100 backstroke event, where Ryan won the women's side in 54.98 seconds, with Yi taking second in the men's event in 53.02 seconds. The 100 breaststroke was a pair of fourth place finishes for Fordham with Savannah Coe recording a time of 1:10.89 for the women, and Sean McManus registering a time of 1:01.58 for the men.
The Rams' third event win came in the women's 200 butterfly by Courtney Collyer, as she posted a winning time of 2:02.69. Patrick Militti was the top men's finisher, placing second overall in 1:55.41.
Up next was the sprint freestyle events, when Morris posted back-to-back event wins in the 50 (21.40) and 100 (47.18) freestyle events. Fordham's top performers in the women's version were Kellie Lyver in the 50 freestyle (4th - 24.87) and Bunster in the 100 freestyle (3rd - 53.72).
Ryan picked up her second event win of the day in the 200 backstroke, posting a time of 2:01.08, while Yi was once again the Rams' top performer, taking second in the men's event in 1:54.07.
The 200 breaststroke event was a repeat of top performers from the 100 breaststroke, as Coe was third in the women's event (2:30.74) with McManus also finishing third in 2:14.22 for the men.
Following the 500 freestyle event, where the Rams took third on the women's side (Field - 5:06.31) and second on the men's side (Zach Jacobsen - 4:50.69), Fordham earned its first event sweep, as Collyer won the women's 100 butterfly in a season-best time of 55.93 seconds, while Noguchi won the men's event in a season-best time of 49.77 seconds.
Collyer then posted her third event win of the afternoon, taking home the 400 individual medley event in a time of 4:25.91. Yi was the top performer for the men, placing second in 4:13.00.
The final swimming event was the 400 freestyle relay, where both Fordham squads took first place. Lyver, Wessel, Biagioli, and Ryan won the women's race in 3:31.89, while Noguchi, Militti, Nick Belfanti, and Morris took the men's event in 3:08.79.
In the diving competition, Elizabeth Dorger was the Rams' top female in the one-meter dive, scoring 260.00, while Andrea Krok was the top three-meter diver with a score of 266.40. On the men's side, Kevin Wong was Fordham's top male performer in both diving events, scoring 222.75 in the one-meter dive and 218.25 in the three-meter dive.
The Fordham swimming & diving team will next be in action on Saturday, February 4th, when the Rams travel to Amherst, Massachusetts, to meet the Massachusetts Minutemen, beginning at 1:00 PM.
