Many believe that good things come in threes. Well that wasn't the case tonight for the Fordham University men's basketball squad as the University of Richmond hit 16 three-pointers en route to a 102-58 Atlantic 10 win over the Rams in the Robins Center.
With the loss, Fordham falls to 8-11 overall, 1-5 in the Atlantic 10, while Richmond snaps a two-game losing streak to improve to 12-9 overall, 3-3 in the conference.
Chris Gaston returned to the Fordham lineup tonight after sitting out the last game due to a flagrant foul he received in the Rhode Island game last Wednesday. He picked up where he left off, notching his 13th double-double of the year with a team-high 22 points and eleven rebounds. The double-double is the 49th in 73 career games for Gaston.
The Rams didn't have an answer for the Richmond barrage of three-pointers as the Spiders connected on seven treys in the first half and nine more in the second, shooting 48.5% (16-33 from behind the arc). The 16 made three-pointers is a Robins Center record.
Richmond opened the scoring with a pair of free throws just over a minute into the game and bumped the lead to 4-0 on a Derrick Williams layup a minute later. Gaston got Fordham on the board with a jumper 20 seconds later and a Branden Frazier three-point play with 17:10 left in the half gave the Rams a 5-4 lead.
The Spiders then used a 12-2 run to take a 16-7 lead following a Darien Brothers basket with 12:20 remaining in the half before a Frazier jumper made it a seven-point game, 16-9, 30 seconds later.
After a Brothers three put Richmond up ten, a pair of Gaston buckets pulled the Rams to within six, 19-13, with 9:41 on the clock.
The Spiders responded to the four Gaston points with a 13-4 run to take a 32-17 lead with 5:56 remaining in the period before the Rams peeled away at Richmond advantage with a 9-3 spurt to make it a nine-point game, 35-26, on two Marvin Dominique free throws with 2:55 left. But the Spiders outscored the Rams 11-2 over the final 2:43 of the half to take a 46-28 lead at the break.
Richmond built the lead to 20 early in the second half before the Rams cut the Spiders' advantage back to 18, 52-34, on a pair of Frazier free throws with 16:50 left, but that was as close as Fordham would get.
Frazier also scored in double figures for the Rams, finishing with eleven points and he added four rebounds and three assists.
The Rams will next be in action on Saturday afternoon, January 28th, as they host the George Washington University Colonials in an Atlantic 10 game in the Rose Hill Gym at 1:00 p.m. in a game that will be broadcast live on the YES Network.

Gaston's 22 points brings his career total to 1,233, moving him ahead of Jason Harris (1997-2001) and Michael Haynes (2000-04) and into a tie for 16th place with Darryl Brown (1972-75) on the Fordham all-time scoring list... He is five points behind Tony McIntosh (1991-85) for 15th place... Gaston's eleven rebounds bring his career total to 824, good for sixth place on the Fordham all-time rebounding list... Khalid Robinson scored his second and third points of the year on a pair of free throws with 40 seconds left... He is now 4-for-5 in his career at the charity stripe... Robinson also pulled down a rebound... The Rams outrebounded the Spiders, 35-33... The win was Richmond's fifth straight over Fordham and the Spiders now lead the all-time series, 10-7... It was the first time the Rams allowed 100 points since a 111-100 loss at Duquense on March 5, 2010.
