In the team's first action following its winter training trip, the Fordham swimming & diving team had the first of two meets this weekend on Friday night. The Rams didn't disappoint, posting a sweep of the Iona Gaels, as the men won by a score of 135-96, while the women won by a 184-59 final score.
Fordham opened the meet with matching victories in the 200 medley relay event. The women's team, consisting of Spencer Chappell, Kelly Bunster, Brienne Ryan, and Alana Biagioli, won the event in 1:50.76, while the men's team of Devon Morris, Thomas Yi, Brennan Simpkins, and Shintaro Noguchi clocked in at 1:39.42.
The 1000 freestyle event also saw a Fordham sweep, as Alexandra Wessel took home the women's event in 10:45.15, while Kevin Kosciuk won the men's version in a time of 10:06.27.
Fordham then posted wins in the women's 200 freestyle, where Kara Field won the event in a time of 1:55.67, as well as in the women's 200 individual medley, which was won by Aurelia O'Keefe in 2:15.32.
The Rams' third event sweep of the night was in the 50 freestyle, as Ryan won the women's event in 24.38 seconds with Noguchi taking the men's event in 21.70 seconds.
The meet then turned over to the one-meter diving competition, where Fordham again swept the event. Andrea Krok won the women's one-meter dive with a season-best score of 265.65, while Kevin Wong also posted a season-best score of 212.77 to win the men's one-meter dive.
Fordham returned to the swimming events with three straight sweeps in the 100 butterfly, the 100 freestyle, and the 100 backstroke events. In the butterfly, it was
Courtney Collyer (57.40) and Morris earning the event wins, while Bunster (54.88) and Yi (48.34) took the 100 freestyle events.
Jordan Tomimatsu (1:00.64) and
Michael Grimmett-Norris (55.02) finished the string of event sweeps in the 100 backstroke.
After a win by Giulia Kaftan in the women's 500 freestyle (5:18.61), the meet turned back over to the divers, where Krok and Wong completed their diving sweep in the three-meter competition. Krok posted a winning score of 248.92 with Wong scoring 205.95 in his win.
The Rams' final event win came in the women's 200 freestyle relay, where the team of Maureen McKenna, Tracy Karpinski, Chappell, and Wessel won in a time of 1:43.05.
It will be a short turnaround for the Fordham swimming & diving team, as the Rams will be back in action on Saturday, January 21st, when they travel to Philadelphia to meet the La Salle Explorers, beginning at noon.
