Lewisburg, Pa. -
With two matches on Saturday, the Fordham volleyball team looked to get back on track after their five-set loss to Bucknell on Friday night. However, Manhattan and Dartmouth had other ideas as both squads topped Fordham on day two of the Bucknell Invitational in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania.
With the losses, Fordham drops to 1-3 on the season, with Manhattan improving to 2-2 and Dartmouth going to 2-0.
The first match of the day came against Manhattan, where the Jaspers won in three sets, 25-21, 25-21, and 25-22.
Set one saw Fordham trailing by as many as 10 points at 23-13, before the Rams reeled off eight straight points to make it, 23-21. Krissy Buongiorno led the way in that stretch with three blocks. The Jaspers' lead was too big to overcome, as Manhattan scored the last two points for the four-point win.
Set two was again a close affair with neither team building more than a two-point lead, until back-to-back kills by Malia McGuinness pushed Manhattan's lead to four, which is how the set would end.
The third set was tight also with seven tie scores, the last at 19 all. Manhattan grabbed the advantage by two on match point, 24-22, with McGuinness finishing the match with a kill.
The Rams had a rough go offensively, hitting less than .100 as a team, committing 20 attack errors. Brittany Daulton was the top threat with seven kills, six digs, and five blocks with Kim Capicotto adding six kills. Sara Konkel and Maria Rodenberg split the setter duties with Konkel having 14 assists and nine digs and Rodenberg adding eight assists, seven digs, and three aces.
In match two, Dartmouth's Madeline Baird had a match-high 17 kills and eight digs, as the Big Green posted a three-set win by scores of 25-18, 25-13, and 25-21.
The Rams fell behind early in the first two sets, as Dartmouth committed only one attack error in that time, leading to a 2-0 set deficit.
In set three, Fordham was even with Dartmouth at 13 all, before a kill and three Fordham attack errors gave Dartmouth a 17-13 edge. The Rams would pull within two, 23-21, on a service ace from Megan Arend, but the Big Green ended with two kills by Annie Villanueva to end the match.
Konkel finished with the lone double-double for Fordham with 19 assists and 10 digs, while Daulton, who was named to the All-Tournament team, had a team-high 10 kills to go with six digs. Rose Diaz-Vazquez and Lisa Hipp also added six kills apiece with Rodenberg having 11 assists and nine digs.
The Fordham volleyball team will next be in action, September 9-11, as the team hosts the 11th Annual Rose Hill Classic at the Rose Hill Gym. The Rams will welcome Colorado, Albany, Siena, and St. John's for the three-day, eight-match tournament.
