Despite a career-high 24 kills from Fordham's Brittany Daulton, the Fordham volleyball team came up short against Bucknell, as the Bison took a 3-2 win over the Rams in the opening match for both teams at the Bucknell Invitational in Lewisburg, Pa. Final set scores were 19-25, 26-24, 25-18, 18-25, and 15-8.
With the loss, Fordham falls to 1-1, while Bucknell moves to 1-0.
The Rams started the match strong with a 25-19 set one win, in which the Rams led by as many as 12 points. Keying that effort was the outside hitter tandem of Lisa Hipp and Brittany Daulton, who combined for eight kills, five of which were from Hipp.
Fordham looked to take a two-set lead, earning set point at 24-23 on a kill from Randi Ewing. Bucknell however had other ideas, reeling off three quick points to tie the match at one set apiece.
Set three saw eight kills from Daulton for Fordham, but Bucknell earned the set win by seven, leaving the Rams in a rough spot. The team though recovered with a seven-point win of their own at 25-18, behind another strong set from Daulton, tallying seven kills on eight attempts.
Playing a deciding fifth set for the second straight match, Fordham fell behind 7-3 after a four-point run by the Bison. Fordham was unable to pull even, as Bucknell scored six of the final eight points to win the fifth set, 15-8.
For Fordham, Daulton recorded a career-high 24 kills, blowing away her previous career-high of 18, set twice last year. She also finished with a .378 hitting percentage and 11 digs. Besides Daulton, Sara Konkel also had a double-double with 28 assists and 12 digs, while Hipp had nine kills, 10 digs and three blocks. Megan Arend posted a team-high 15 digs and two assists with Maria Rodenberg having nine assists, eight digs, and three aces.
The Fordham volleyball team will be back in action on day two of the Bucknell Invitational on Saturday, as they meet Manhattan at 10:00 AM and Dartmouth at 3:00 PM.
