Volleyball Drops Opening Match at the Brown Invitational

Providence, R.I. - The Fordham volleyball team looked to get back in the win column on Friday night on the opening night of the Brown Invitational in Providence, Rhode Island. However, Brown's Maddie Lord registered a match-high 20 kills to lead the Bears to a four-set victory over the Rams. Final set scores were 25-19, 25-17, 25-27, and 25-21.

With the loss, Fordham drops to 2-7, while Brown improved to 3-5.

Despite a strong effort from the Rams, which saw a .237 hitting percentage, five service aces, and seven team blocks, the Bears outperformed Fordham in each those categories, hitting .338 with seven aces and eight blocks.

The match could have easily gone the Bears way up two sets with match point at 24-21. The Rams though fought off three match points to tie the third set at 24 all. A kill by Randi Ewing gave the Rams set point at 25-24. After a pair of side out points, Fordham snagged the third set, 27-25, on a Brown attack error.

Fordham continued to have the momentum in set four, leading by three, 13-10, after another kill by Ewing, and later stretching it to four, 16-12, on a block by Krissy Buongiorno and Lindsay Ritchie. Brown however reeled off four straight points to knot the set at 16 all. After back and forth side outs made it 18 all, the Bears had another four-point stretch to grab a 22-18 edge, a lead they would not relinquish.

For Fordham, Brittany Daulton had a double-double with 13 kills and 13 digs, while Ewing added 11 kills and four blocks. Buongiorno had a strong contest with a .471 hitting percentage on eight kills without an error and three blocks with Sara Konkel dishing out 23 assists, eight digs, and two aces.

Besides Lord, Brown's Emma Pastore had 18 kills with Thea Derrough adding 13 kills.

The Rams are back in action on Saturday with two matches against Bryant at 10:00 AM and Maryland-Eastern Shore at 4:30 PM.
