The Fordham water polo team opened competition at the Princeton Invitational on Saturday with a pair of matches. The Rams began the day with a 14-6 loss to 17th-ranked Princeton, while just getting edged in their second contest against Johns Hopkins, 7-6.
Fordham is now 2-4 on the season.
In match one, the 17th-ranked Princeton Tigers jumped out to a 5-0 lead and never looked back, topping the Rams by a 14-6 score.
J.D. Shrewsbury and Robert Fleming each had a pair of goals for the Rams, while Jake Bakas and Daniel Barron netted the final two tallies. In net, Christian Flessner and Noah LeBeau split the match with Flessner making seven saves in the opening half with LeBeau making eight saves in the second period.
In match two, the continuing close game rivalry between Fordham and Johns Hopkins continued with another one-goal affair, as the Bluejays snuck out a 7-6 decision over the Rams.
With the score tied at four, the Rams netted two goals in the third period to take a 6-5 lead. Johns Hopkins however scored the only two goals of the fourth quarter to win the match.
For Fordham, Nicholas Allen paced the attack with three goals, while Shrewsbury had two goals. Willie Leach scored the final Rams' marker. In net, LeBeau played the entire match posting a season-high 10 saves to go with four steals.
The Rams are back in action on Sunday with matches against Harvard (12:40 PM) and Santa Clara (4:10 PM).
