Bronx, N.Y. -
In what was a different "Battle of the Bronx" for the Rams on Tuesday as the Fordham men's soccer team hosted fellow Bronx school, Monroe College in an exhibition soccer match that the Rams took 5-2 on Tuesday night on Jack Coffey Field. Tim Richardson led the Rams with two goals and Julian Nagel added another goal and an assist in the win.
Fordham took a 1-0 lead early in the first half when Nagel recovered a rebound off a Fordham corner kicked and crossed the ball across the right side of the box to Richardson, who headed it back off the far post and in past Jean-Carlo Perez for the Rams' first goal.
After Anthony Assante knotted the score at 1-1 for the Mustangs, Fordham grabbed a 2-1 advantage on an unassisted score that came off a Nagel shot that Perez parried to his right and Richardson buried in the back of the net. Monroe eventually tied the score at 2-2, and the score remained tied into the halftime.
Fordham put the game away in the second half with three unanswered goals. At the 46:18 mark of the second half, midfielder John Niyonsaba blasted a volley from way outside the goalie box and went into the upper, far corner of the net for an amazing goal that gave the Rams a 3-2 edge.
The lead extended to 4-2 almost five minutes later when Nagel intercepted a pass forward from the goalie, and he chipped it over the goalie and into the net. The final Fordham marker came in the ninetieth minute when second-half substitute, Sam Jolly centered a ball from the right side of the pitch and Taylor Gulbins found it with his head and deflected it by the goalie for the game's final score.
The Rams won 5-2 and they will conclude their exhibition schedule on Saturday, August 20 when the welcome NJIT to Jack Coffey Field for a game at 7:00 PM.
