South Orange, N.J. -
The Fordham baseball team saw Mother Nature hold off the rain long enough to sneak in their Tuesday game at Seton Hall's Owen T. Carroll Field in South Orange, New Jersey. However, the Rams could not contain Seton Hall's Will Walsh, whose great-grandfather played at Fordham, as he had four hits and three runs scored in a 9-2 victory by the Pirates.
With the loss, Fordham falls to 30-21-1, while Seton Hall improves to 26-23.
Despite arriving late due to major traffic issues, Fordham found itself down just 1-0 entering the second inning when the Rams tied the game on a sacrifice fly by Stephen McSherry, scoring Chris Walker. Walker led off the frame with a single, moved to second on a walk to Tim Swatek, and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Joe Russo.
The Rams then took a 2-1 lead in the third inning. Brian Kownacki was hit by a pitch with one out, and moved to third on a single by Ryan Lee. Walker then singled up the middle to score Kownacki.
The score remained 2-1 until the bottom of the fifth, where an RBI-single by A.J. Rusbarsky knotted the game at two for the Pirates.
Seton Hall then exploded for six runs in the sixth inning to take an 8-2 lead, and tacked on an insurance run in the eighth for a 9-2 victory.
For Fordham, John Flanagan (1-1) took the loss, allowing three runs on six hits in three-plus innings of relief. Brian Thompson got the start, allowing one run on two walks in two innings of work with Jonathan Reich, Ryan DeMartino, Joseph Charest, and Ryan Fedak also seeing action on the hill for Fordham.
At the plate, Walker was 3-for-4 with an RBI, while Swatek was 2-for-2 with a stolen base. Ryan Maghini was the lone other Ram to have a multi-hit game, posting a 2-for-3 night with a double.
The Fordham baseball team will next be in action on Thursday, May 19th, when the Rams host the Xavier Musketeers for the start of a three-game Atlantic 10 series at Houlihan Park.
