Bronx, N.Y. -
St. Bonaventure's Eddie Gray kept the Fordham bats in check on Saturday, allowing just six hits over eight innings of work, while Billy Urban drove in three runs, as the Bonnies earned their second straight win over the Rams, 6-2, at Houlihan Park in the Bronx.
With the loss, Fordham falls to 17-13 overall, 2-3 in the Atlantic 10, while St. Bonaventure improves to 8-14 on the year, 2-3 in the league.
The Bonnies jumped on Fordham starter Max Krakowiak early with a single run in the first. Brad Steinbach opened the game with a single and stole second. Jamie Wallschlaeger then drew a walk, and both runners advanced on a sacrifice bunt. Steinbach then scored on a Billy Urban fielder's choice for the early 1-0 lead.
St. Bonaventure extended the lead to 4-0 in the fourth, with three runs coming across the plate, highlighted by an RBI-double by Michael Grieco.
Fordham cracked the scoreboard in the fifth, as Ryan Lee reached on an infield single and moved to second on a Brian Kownacki single. After a pair of outs moved the runners up a base, Lee scored on a wild pitch.
St. Bonaventure responded right away with a two-run double by Urban in the top of the sixth to give the Bonnies their largest lead at 6-1.
The Rams closed to with 6-2 in the eighth inning, picking up a run on an error, but that would not be enough, as the Bonnies' Eddie Gray (3-1) had a very strong game, allowing just one earned run on six hits with six strikeouts over eight innings. Robert Nalepa pitched a perfect ninth to close out the win.
Krakowiak (3-4) took the loss for the Rams, allowing four earned runs on eight hits and three walks with four strikeouts, while Tim Swatek threw the final five innings in relief, giving up two unearned runs on three hits with two strikeouts.
At the plate, the Rams managed six hits from six different players, which included one from Chris Walker, who extended his hit streak to a career-long 11 games.
The same two teams will match-up for game three of this series on Sunday at noon.
