Despite a 12-hit barrage from the Fordham Rams, it was Fordham miscues that led to six unearned runs and 6-5 Atlantic 10 loss to the St. Bonaventure Bonnies at Houlihan Park on Friday afternoon.
With the loss, Fordham falls to 17-12 overall, 2-2 in the Atlantic 10, while St. Bonaventure improved to 7-14 on the year, 1-3 in the league.
St. Bonaventure opened the scoring in the second, as Jason Radwan doubled to left center with one out, moved to third on a ground out, and scored on a passed ball.
Fordham answered back with three runs in the bottom of the inning to grab a 3-1 lead. Ryan Lee led off with a single, followed by a single from Brian Kownacki. Joe Russo then reached on an infield single to load the bases. Stephen McSherry plated Lee with a sacrifice fly to right, while one out later, Tim Swatek connected for a two-run single, scoring Kownacki and Ryan Maghini.
St. Bonaventure rallied back with four unearned runs in the fourth to take a 5-3. An error early in the inning led to a three-run home run by Brad Steinbach, his first of the season, as well as an RBI-single by Alex Calderon.
The Bonnies extended their lead to 6-3 in the seventh with another unearned run off an error and an eventual sacrifice fly by Ryan Skellie.
Fordham looked to rally back in the eighth, as the Rams loaded the bases with one out. McSherry reached on an error and moved to second on a single by Swatek. Nick Martinez then drew a walk with Ryan David lifting a sacrifice fly to right, scoring McSherry from third. Walker then plated Swatek with an RBI-single to left to make it 6-5. St. Bonaventure then brought in Steinbach from right field to pitch to Lee, striking him out to end the inning.
In the ninth, Fordham got the potential tying run on base, as Kownacki drew a walk. Pinch-hitter Matt DeSilva sacrificed Kownacki to second with pinch-hitter Alex Kenny moving Kownacki to third on a ground out. St. Bonaventure reliever Jamie Wallschlaeger then struck out Maghini to end the game in favor of the Bonnies.
Fordham's Brian Pendergast fell to 1-5 on the season, allowing six runs, all unearned, on eight hits with four strikeouts, while Rich Anastasi pitched 2.1 innings of hitless relief with two strikeouts.
At the plate, Swatek posted his first career three-hit game, going 3-for-4 with two RBI, while Lee was 3-for-5 with a run scored. Maghini was 2-for-5 with a run scored with Walker extending his hit streak to 10 games with two hits and an RBI.
The same two teams will match-up for game two of this series on Saturday at 1:00 PM.
