Bronx, N.Y. -
Fordham softball's Jen Mineau, a junior pitcher and All-American, had five career no-hitters entering Friday's game with George Washington. She picked up her sixth that day, as the Rams defeated the Colonials, 3-0, in an Atlantic 10 Conference game played at Bahoshy Field in the Bronx.
Mineau was her own worst enemy in the first inning as she threw a comebacker over the head of Jamie LaBovick at first, and Colonials' batter Kaite Terrazas reached second. Terrazas ended up a third with two outs, but Mineau struck out Tara Fogarty swinging to escape trouble.
It looked as though the Rams might get on the board in the second when Beckah Wiggins reached on an error. She stole second and advanced to third on a ground out. With two outs, Chelsea Palumbo ripped a sharp line drive that was snagged by the second baseman and Wiggins was stranded at third.
Fordham had better luck the very next inning as Jocelyn Dearborn, who had left the game and re-entered do to a brief injury, ripped the Kara Clauss offering over the wall and on to the tennis courts in left. It was the 11th home run of the season for Dearborn, and the Rams led 1-0.
In the fourth, Mineau worked out of trouble again as she had second and third with two outs. She got her counterpart, Clauss, looking at strike three and the Colonials left a pair of runners in scoring position.
Fordham made the score 2-0 in the fifth as Lindsey Kay Bright reached on an infield single. She stole second and came in to score when a Nicole Callahan rip was misplayed at second base for an error.
The final run of the game came on a Gabby Luety, opposite-field home run in the bottom of the sixth. The blast was Luety's fifth of the season.
In throwing her sixth-career no hitter (and first in the 2011 campaign), Mineau walked just one batter and struck out 12. She struck out the side in the second and seventh innings. With the win, she improved to 11-7 on the season. As a team, the Rams now have a 23-16 record, including a 6-3 conference mark.
These two teams conclude their series with a single game on Saturday, April 9. The first pitch is scheduled for noon.
