Bronx, N.Y. - Two of the three Jesuit schools that sponsor softball in the Atlantic 10 met for a pair of games on Sunday, April 3, at the Bahoshy Softball Field in the Bronx. In the end, the two teams split a pair of games by 1-0 scores. The Hawks beat the Rams 1-0 in the opener and lost to Fordham 1-0 in the second game.

Runs and hits were at a premium in the first game as the two schools each threw their ace pictures in game one. Saint Joseph's put Erin Gallagher in the circle and she was matched by Jen Mineau for Fordham.

Neither team did anything until the bottom of the third. With two outs, Lindsey Kay Bright slapped a single through the left side. This turned out to be the only hit of the game for Fordham. Jocelyn Dearborn ripped a ball to second base that was misplayed by Laura Cardone for an error. On the error, Bright hustled all the way around to third. She was stranded there, though, as Nicole Callahan grounded out to end the inning.

The Hawks got a runner in scoring position in the fourth as Cardone reached on a bunt single. She moved to second on a sacrifice, but was stranded there as Mineau struck out the next two batters to leave the runner in scoring position. Mineau ended the day with 11 strikeouts.

Saint Joseph's broke through for the game's only run in the sixth. With a runner on first, Dana Parks reached base on a fielder's choice that erased the baserunner. She later stole second and was there with two outs. Because there were two outs, Parks ran on contact when Bernadette Moran popped up a ball to shortstop that Samantha Pellechio lost in the sun. The ball landed cleanly in the infield for a single and Parks scored from second. The Hawks plated the games only run and won 1-0.

Mineau threw a complete game and took the loss. She allowed one run on five hits and walked just one. Her record fell to 10-7. She was bested by Gallagher who allowed just one hit while striking out nine. She improved to 18-6.

Game Two

The rubber match saw more solid pitching as Chelsea Plimpton took the circle for Fordham against Taryn Ashway for Saint Joseph's. Once again, runs and hits would come at a premium.

Neither team threatened to score until the fourth inning. In the top of the frame, Parks singled up the middle. She advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. She advanced to third on a ground out. With two outs, Monica Aguilar walked to put runners on the corners. Two pitches later, she stole second to put a pair of runners in scoring position. Plimpton escaped trouble by striking out Shannon Kramer looking.

The Hawks rallied again just an inning later. With one out, Taylor Korpita singled to right center. Shed advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. Two batters after Korpita, Loguidice ripped a single to center. On the play, Korpita rounded third, but a strong throw home by Jessica Crowley caught her hung up between third and home. Meghan Shager tossed the ball to Jocelyn Dearborn who tagged out the potential go-ahead run and the Rams escaped unscathed.

Gallagher relieved Ashway in the fifth and she retired the Rams in order. In the sixth, Fordham scored the game's only run without getting a hit. Dearborn led off with a walk. She promptly stole second. Bright advanced her to third with a ground out and Dearborn scored on an RBI ground out by Pellechio to first. Plimpton retired the Hawks in order in the seventh and the Rams had their split.

With the split, Fordham has a 22-15 record, including a 5-3 A-10 mark. Saint Joseph's is 23-12 overall, 7-3 in league play. The Rams return to action on Wednesday, April 6, when they welcome the Hofstra Pride to Bahoshy Field. The first pitch is scheduled for 6:00 P.M.
