Bronx, N.Y. -
The Fordham Rams and Iona Gaels share a rivalry that dates back to 1985, when both schools were members of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, and on Tuesday, April 26, in the Bronx, the rivalry was renewed as Fordham defeated Iona 1-0 in the forty-sixth meeting between the two institutions. The Rams improved to 32-17 with the win, while the Gaels fell to 17-17. Jocelyn Dearborn's first inning triple moved her within two hits of the all-time school mark of 251, set by Allison Twarowski from 2004-2008.
Fordham came out of the gate in a hurry as Dearborn led off the game with a stand-up triple off the wall in right-center. The three-bagger was her seventh of the season, one shy of the NCAA lead. The next batter, Nicole Callahan, ripped an RBI base hit back through the box and Fordham grabbed a 1-0 lead.
The slim advantage turned out to be all that starter Jen Mineau needed on the day. The junior, All-American was masterful as she threw a complete-game shutout and improved to 16-7 on the season. She allowed just two base runners, both on singles, and struck out 11. But she had to work out of trouble a couple of times.
In the Iona fourth, Eileen McCann led off with a single to center. The next batter, Jodi Petersen, reached on a fielder's choice that failed to record an out. With runners on first and second and no one out, Iona's Alyssa Maiese ripped a grounder that Beckah Wiggins fielded, tossed to Samantha Pellechio to get the lead runner, and Pellechio then made an even-better relay throw to complete the double play. McCann advanced to third, where she remained with two outs. The final out came when Mineau struck out Katie Jansson looking. The Gaels never threatened again and Fordham had the slim victory.
In the game, Fordham managed five hits. Besides Callahan and Dearborn, Pellechio, Chelsea Palumbo and Lindsey Kay Bright all had singles. Bright stole her team-leading twelfth base of the season.
The Rams return to action just twenty-four hours later on Wednesday, April 27, as they close out the home portion of the their schedule against fellow Jesuit school, St. Peter's. The start time of the doubleheader is 3:00 P.M.
