Charlotte, N.C. - With pitching as the centerpiece of the Fordham-Charlotte baseball series this weekend, it was only fitting that another pitcher had the headline performance in the rubber match for the series. Unfortunately for Fordham, it was Charlotte's Tyler Barnette throwing a complete game six-hitter as the 49ers took the series with an 8-3 win over the Rams at Hayes Stadium.

With the loss, Fordham falls to 24-15 overall, 7-5 in the Atlantic 10, while Charlotte moved to 11-5 in the league and 31-9 overall.

For the third straight game, Fordham opened the scoring with a single run in the first. Nick Martinez led off with a single and stole second. After a ground out advanced Martinez to third, Ryan Lee plated Martinez with another ground out.

The 49ers quickly knotted the game at one in the bottom half of the frame on a fielder's choice by Tony Montalbano, scoring Justin Wilson. Wilson had walked and moved to third on a single by Shane Basen.

Fordham recaptured the lead in the third, as the Rams loaded the bases with no outs on a hit batsman and two walks. Fordham though only cashed in one run as Ryan David grounded into a double play, scoring Stephen McSherry from third for a 2-1 lead.

Charlotte answered back with a four-run frame to take a 5-2 lead, highlighted by a two-run ground rule double by Corey Shaylor, and then extended the lead to 6-2 in the fourth on an RBI-single by Wilson.

Fordham closed back within three, 6-3, in the fifth inning. Martinez singled with two outs, advanced to second on a failed pickoff attempt, and scored on an RBI-single by David, extending David's hit streak to 10 games.

The 49ers though would score single runs in the bottom of the fifth and eighth innings to seal an 8-3 win.

Fordham starter Max Krakowiak (4-5) took the loss, allowing seven runs on nine hits in four plus innings of work. Martinez was 2-for-3 with two runs scored to lead the Fordham offense.

The Fordham baseball team will next be in action on Wednesday, April 27th, when the Rams host Columbia for a doubleheader at Houlihan Park, beginning at 4:00 PM.
