Fordham Softball Sweeps Fairleigh Dickinson, 8-0, 18-0

Hackensack, N.J. - The Fordham softball team traveled across the Hudson River to nearby Hackensack, New Jersey and swept a doubleheader from Fairleigh Dickinson, 8-0 and 18-0. With the two wins, the Rams have a new season-high, eight game winning streak. They improved to 30-16 overall, while the Knights fell to 22-18.

Jen Mineau was dominant in game one for the Rams, as FDU put just five balls in play for the entire game. She finished with 15 strikeouts and allowed just two singles.

Mineau got some offensive help right away as Jocelyn Dearborn led off the game with her thirteenth home run of the season. Two batters later, Samantha Pellechio made the score 2-0 for Fordham with another solo home run. Still in the first, Beckah Wiggins connected on her first of two hits, this one a double, and drove in Gabby Luety, who had singled. Wiggins finished two runs scored and two RBI in game one. Chelsea Palumbo followed Wiggins, and she also ripped a double to the wall in left-center that scored Jamie LaBovick and Wiggins. Fordham had a 5-0 lead after a half of an inning.

In the fifth, the Rams made the lead 6-0 when Wiggins hit a wind-aided home run to the opposite field in right. They added two more runs in the sixth as Deaborn hit her team-leading, sixth triple of the season to drive in Jessica Crowley, who had singled. Nicole Callahan followed Dearborn, and completed the Fordham scoring with an RBI groundout. The Rams took the opener 8-0.

For Fordham, Dearborn had three hits and two RBI. Lutey had two hits and a run scored. Wiggins had two hits, two runs scored and two RBI.

Game Two

Game two saw more firepower from the Rams bats as they pushed 18 runs across to win 18-0. Fordham pushed three runs across in the first as Dearborn led off with a double. LaBovick followed with a walk, and they both came in on a double to left-center from Wiggins. Wiggins had four extra base hits on the day. Wiggins scored the third run of the inning on a fly ball that was dropped by the centerfielder.

The Rams made the score 12-0 after two innings as they scored nine times in the second. Dearborn opened the scoring in the frame with an RBI groundout that scored Meghan Shager, who had doubled earlier. Two batters later, Pellechio ripped a double to left that scored LaBovick and Lindsey Kay Bright. Luety followed that with a two-run home run that made it 8-0, Fordham. Wiggins went back-to-back with a solo shot and the Rams had a 9-0 edge. Bright drove in Palumbo, who had doubled and Deaborn came up again in the inning and made the score 12-0 with a two-RBI single that scored Bright and Shager. In the second, the Rams scored nine runs on eight hits.

Fordham made the score 15-0 in the third as Jessica Richards hit a bases clearing single that scored three runs (one runner scored on a fielding error). The Rams capped the scoring in the fourth as Pellechio, Katherine VanBenschoten and Richards all had RBI hits in the inning.

Chelsea Plimpton went the distance to improve to 15-9 on the season. Wiggins was 3-3 with three RBI and three runs scored. Pellechio was 2-3 and also collected three RBI.

The Rams return at Atlantic 10 conference play on Saturday, April 23, when they host the Dayton Flyers in a doubleheader. The first pitch is scheduled for noon.
