Bronx, N.Y. -
Despite falling behind twice in the game and committing four errors, the Fordham baseball team stayed resilient in its Saturday afternoon match-up with the UMass Minutemen. In the end, Fordham's Ryan Lee drove in three runs and came around to score on Chris Walker's RBI-single in the bottom of the ninth to give the Rams a 6-5 walk-off win at Houlihan Park.
With the win, Fordham extends its win streak to four games and improves its overall record to 16-9 on the season, while UMass moves to 7-11.
Fordham opened the scoring in the first, as Ryan David singled with one out, moved to second on a ground ball, and scored on a double by Chris Walker for the early 1-0 lead.
The Minutemen tied the game at one in the second on a sacrifice fly by Tom Conley, scoring Matt Gedman from third. Gedman had walked, moved to second on a single, and advanced to third on a wild pitch.
UMass then scored three times in the fourth to take a 4-1 lead. The inning was highlighted by a two-run triple by Gedman and another sacrifice fly by Conley.
Fordham answered back in the seventh with three runs of their own to knot the game at four. Tim Swatek doubled to right center with one out with Nick Martinez drawing a walk. One out later, Ryan Lee lined a two-run triple to right center, plating Swatek and Martinez, to make it a 4-3 score. Lee then scored on a wild pitch to tie the game at four.
The Minutemen quickly regained the lead in the eighth, picking up an unearned run on an error, a single, and a wild pitch.
The Rams would not go quietly however, scoring twice in the ninth to win the game, 6-5. Martinez singled up the middle with one out and moved to second on a ground out. Lee then connected for a double to left center, just out of the reach of the UMass leftfielder, scoring Martinez to tie the game at five. Walker then ripped the next pitch to right for a single, scoring Lee and giving Fordham the walk off win.
Fordham's Jonathan Reich (2-0) picked up the win in relief, giving up just one hit and one unearned run in two innings of work. Starter Brian Pendergast went seven innings, allowing three earned runs on five hits with three strikeouts.
At the plate, Walker was 3-for-5 with two RBI, while Lee was 2-for-5 with two runs scored and three RBI. David also had a three-hit game for the Rams with Martinez scoring a pair of runs.
The Fordham baseball team will next be in action on Sunday, April 3rd, when they host the Albany Great Danes for a doubleheader at Houlihan Park, beginning at noon.
