Rams Fall to St. Bonaventure in Opening Round of A-10 Championship

Lowell, Mass. - The Fordham women's basketball team saw its 2010-2011 campaign come to an abrupt end on Friday, March 4, in the opening round of the Atlantic 10 Championship in a 48-41 loss to St. Bonaventure. The game, played in the Tsongas Center in Lowell, Massachusetts, pitted the #7 Bonnies against the #10 Rams.

The opening seven minutes of the contest saw both teams exchange the lead several times. With the game even at 12-12, at the 12:19 mark, the Bonnies went on a 6-0 run to take an 18-12 lead over the Rams. Cece Dixon capped the run with a layup. The six-point cushion was the largest of the half for St. Bonaventure.

Down six at 7:54 in the first, the Rams used a 7-1 run to tie the game at 21-21. In that run, Beck Peters hit a pair of foul shots, Tiffany Stokes hit a jumper, and Kyara Weekes tied the game with another jump shot. From there, the Bonnies jumped ahead by four points, 25-21, but a three-pointer from Abigail Corning brought Fordham within one, at 25-24, with 0:35 second left in the half. St. Bonaventure hit a jumper in the closing seconds and took a 27-24 advantage into halftime.

The second half saw the Rams continue their defensive intensity that became their trademark over the season. In the first five plus minutes of the half, Fordham turned a six-point deficit into a tie game, at 30-30 when Caitlin Shadbolt hit a jumper. Less than a minute later, the Rams broke the fifth tie of the game when Stokes hit a jumper to give Fordham a 32-30 lead.

From their, St. Bonaventure went on a 10-0 run to take their largest lead of the game, 40-32, when Armelia Horton made two free throws at 8:02. Once again, the Rams showed their constitution and fought back. They got to within four points, at 45-41, when Peters made a steal at one end of the floor and took it back for a layup. The Bonnies went on to win 48-41.

Peters led the Rams with 13 points. She shot 5-of-11 in the game and had four steals. Stokes finished with nine points and a team-best six rebounds. She also blocked three shots. Weekes chipped in with seven points.

Fordham advanced to the A-10 Championship for the second year in a row under the Coach Andruzzi era. This was the second time the Rams were defeated by the Bonnies this season, having lost, 62-52, on February 19.

Game Notes: This was the final game for six Rams: seniors, Kristina Bell, Kyara Weekes, Caitlin Shadbolt, Alexandria Zamora and Tiffany Stokes...Fordham outscored St. Bonaventure in the paint, 14-6...This was the ninth team the Rams held below the 50-point barrier this season...In scoring 13 points, Becky Peters comes closer to the 1000 point plateau...She finished her junior season with 994 points.
