Final Stats

Jamaica, N.Y. - The Fordham softball team won it's third straight game over St. John's 5-4 on Tuesday, March 22. The game, which was originally scheduled for March 23, was moved up a day due to the weather forecast for Wednesday. The quick change didn't affect the Rams, though, as they beat the Red Storm at Red Storm Field in Jamaica, New York.

Chelsea Plimpton took the mound for Fordham against the very school with which she began her collegiate career. She held the Johnnies scoreless for the first two innings and her teammates gave her some help in the top of the third.

In the third, Katherine VanBenschoten led off the inning with a walk. Two batters later, Lindsey Kay Bright walked and the Rams had two runners on. Brittany Longo came in to run for VanBenschoten. Jocelyn Dearborn then singled to right to load the bases. Nicole Callahan got the Rams on the board with a sacrifice fly to left that scored Longo. The next batter, Samantha Pellechio, gave Fordham a 2-0 lead with another single, this one up the middle, that scored Bright.

In the bottom of the third, St. John's got a run back on three singles in the frame. The third, an RBI base hit from Chrissy Montez, scored Chelsea Durning to make the score 2-1 for Fordham.

The Rams extended their lead in the top of the fourth. Beckah Wiggins, crushed the first pitch she saw over the right field wall for a solo home run. Fordham led 3-1.

The lead was short-lived, however, as St. John's scored three times in the fifth to take a 4-3 lead. Julia Sanchez got on with a hit by pitch. Two batters later, Fachon Jones walked and the Red Storm had runners on first and second. Montez followed Jones with a grounder that was misplayed by Pellechio for an error. With the bases loaded and two outs, Jackie Reed doubles down the left-field line and scored Jones and Sanchez. The two unearned runs tied the game at 3-3. Amber Curry followed with an RBI single that scored Montez and gave the Red Storm a 4-3 lead. All the runs in the inning were unearned.

Fordham tied the game in the top of the sixth. Pellechio led off with a double to right. She advanced to third on a groundout and scored on a single from Gabby Luety.

With the game tied, the Rams took their last at-bats in the top of the seventh. With one out, Bright reached on a fielding error from Sanchez. Two batters later, Callahan ripped a grounder that was misplayed by Curry for an error. On the play, Bright kept running and eventually got home as Curry committed her second error on the play on an errant throw home. Fordham took a 5-4 lead and held on to win by that score.

Jen Mineau threw the final two innings to get the win. Pellechio finished 2-3 with an RBI and a run scored. The Rams return to action on Saturday, March 26 when they face St. Bonaventure in a doubleheader starting at noon. The game originally scheduled for Friday, March 25, is postponed and now is part of the double header on the twenty-sixth.
