Baseball Falls To Stony Brook at the Rawlings Strike Out Cancer Tournament

South Orange, N.J. - Stony Brook banged out 18 hits and got seven strong innings from Nick Tropeano, as the Seawolves defeated the Fordham Rams, 13-2, in the second game of the Rawlings Strike Out Cancer Tournament at Owen T. Carroll Field in South Orange, New Jersey.

With the loss, Fordham dropped its third straight game, moving the team's record to 11-7 overall, while Stony Brook improved to 10-4.

After a scoreless first inning, Stony Brook scored a single run in the second and third innings to grab an early 2-0 lead, both on RBI-ground outs.

Fordham made it a 2-1 game in the bottom of third, as Ryan David connected for a one-out double. David was then pinch run for by John Flanagan, who moved to third on a balk, and scored on an RBI-single by Joe Russo.

The Seawolves then broke the game open with a seven-run fourth inning, highlighted by a two-run double by Tanner Nivins.

Stony Brook increased its lead to as many as 12-1, before Fordham scored a run in the seventh, as Ryan Maghini doubled to left, moved to third on a ground out, and scored on a wild pitch.

The Seawolves closed the scoring with a single run in the eighth on an RBI-single by Steve Marino, as Stony Brook totaled 18 hits in the game, which included eight extra base hits. Stony Brook starter Nick Tropeano (3-1) held the Rams in check, allowing two runs on five hits with 10 strikeouts.

Fordham starter Max Krakowiak (2-2) took the loss allowing eight earned runs on 12 hits with three strikeouts. Brian Thompson, John Porter, Joseph Charest, and Jeremy Adel each pitched an inning out of the bullpen.

At the plate, Maghini was 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored, while Russo was 1-for-4 with an RBI.

The Fordham baseball team wraps up play at the Rawlings Strike Out Cancer Tournament on Sunday with a 10:00 AM game against NJIT.
