Seton Hall's Benny Mejia threw six innings of two-run ball, while Zack Granite and Mike Genovese each had two hits, as the Pirates topped the Fordham Rams, 7-3, in the opening game of the Rawlings Strike Out Cancer Tournament in South Orange, New Jersey.
With the loss, Fordham drops to 11-6 overall, while Seton Hall moves to 6-9.
Fordham opened the scoring in the second with a pair of runs.  Stephen McSherry singled to left to open the frame and moved to third on a double by Ryan Maghini.  Tim Swatek then ripped a single to left, scoring both runners.
The Pirates answered back in the bottom of the frame, as Chase Gray and Dillon Hamlin knocked out back-to-back doubles to close the gap to 2-1.
Seton Hall added two more runs in the third to take a 3-2 lead.  With two on and two out, Giuseppe Pappacio reached on an infield single with the throw going past the Fordham first baseman, allowing both base runners to score.
The Pirates then opened up the game with a four-run sixth, sending ten batters to the plate, as Seton Hall increased their lead to 7-2.
Fordham did get a run back in the eighth, as Joe Russo connected for a solo home run to left, his first of the season, but that was all the Rams could muster, falling by a 7-3 final score.
For Fordham, starter Brian Pendergast fell to 1-3 on the season, allowing six earned runs on 10 hits with four strikeouts.  Rich Anastasi (0.2 IP, 1 H), Jonathan Reich (1.2 IP, 1 H), and Ryan DeMartino (0.1 IP) combined for the final 2.2 innings, allowing two hits.
At the plate, Russo was 2-for-4 with a home run, while Ryan David was also 2-for-4.  Swatek finished 1-for-4 with two RBI.
The Fordham baseball team continues play at the Strike Out Cancer Tournament on Saturday, March 19th, with a 10:00 AM game against Stony Brook.
