The Fordham softball team continued its torrid play on day two of the Cavalier Classic with an 8-4 win over the host school, Virginia. Jocelyn Dearborn continued her hot hitting by smacking two more home runs. She currently has five homeruns in the three games played so far.
Dearborn led off the game with a solo home run and the Rams quickly had a 1-0 lead. In the bottom of the first, starting pitcher Chelsea Plimpton, continued her strong pitching by striking out the side to start the game.
Fordham extended its lead to 4-0 by scoring three times in the second inning. The Rams had three hits in the inning. All were extra base hits. Jamie LaBovick hit a double to left field to start the rally. She was followed by Beckah Wiggins, who blasted a two-run homerun to center to make the score 3-0. Chelsea Palumbo followed with a solo shot giving Fordham a 4-0 advantage on back-to- back homeruns.
Fordham pushed two more runs across in the third to take a 6-0 lead. After three singles from Samatha Pellechio, LaBovick and Palumbo loaded the bases, catcher Meghan Shager brought home LaBovick and Pellechio with a groundball to short that was misplayed for an error.
The Cavaliers finally got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the third. Giannina Cippolloni hit a one-out single to left field. Alison Pittman followed her with a double down the left-field line, which put runners on second and third. The next batter, Marcy Bowdren, tripled to score two runs and brought Virginia within 6-2. Stephanie Harris followed with an RBI single up the middle and the Cavaliers were within three runs, trailing 6-3.
Fordham made it 7-3 in the fourth as Dearborn led off the inning with another solo home run, her second of the game. They made it 8-3, just one inning later as Wiggins walked and came in to score when Palumbo doubled to right center. Wiggins scored when Palumbo tried to stretch her double into a triple and the relay throw came from the catcher to third, which allowed her to score.
Virginia pushed a run across in the sixth when Harris tripled and came in on a sacrifice fly from Kristen Hawkins. It was the second triple of the game for the Cavaliers.
Plimpton went the distance to record her third win of the weekend. She allowed 10 hits, four runs (all earned), struck out six and didn't walk a batter. Dearborn was 2-4 with two homeruns, two runs scored and two RBI. Palumbo collected three hits, a homerun and and RBI as well.
Fordham is now 12-10 with the win. They close out day two of the Cavalier Classic with a re-match against Princeton. They defeated the Tigers 15-0 on Saturday.
Game Two
LaBovick took the circle in game two of the day as the Rams faced Princeton for the second time in the weekend. Fordham defeated the Tigers 15-0 in the first meeting on March 12.
Fordham took an early 1-0 lead on Princeton in the first inning as Nicole Callahan singled and scored on an RBI double from Pellechio. They added two more runs in the second to take a 3-0 lead. In the second, the Rams loaded the bases with two outs as Jo Krasnisky reached on a throwing error, Lindsey Kay Bright singled up the middle and Dearborn reached on an infield hit. With the sacks full, Callahan came through with a two-RBI single up the middle that scored Krasnisky and Bright.
After Princeton scored a run in the top of the fourth to make the score 3-1, Fordham pushed two more runs across in the bottom of the fifth to take a 5-1 lead. In the fifth, Gabby Luety was hit by the pitch and advanced to first. The next batter, Pellechio, hit a two-run homerun to left-center and Fordham went on to win 5-1.
LaBovick tossed a complete-game four hitter. She walked one and struck out four to earn the win. Pellechio had two hits and three RBI and Callahan had a pair of hits also. Fordham closes out play at the Cavalier Classic on Monday, March 14, as they play Virginia at 3:00 P.M.
