On the final day of the USF Tournament from Clearwater, Florida, the Fordham softball team fell to the Blazers from Alabama-Birmingham 2-0. Rams' starter Chelsea Plimpton went the distance and was the hard-luck loser in the game.
In a game dominated by pitching, neither team had a player reach scoring position until the third inning. In the bottom of the third, Fordham catcher, Meghan Shager hit an infield single to shortstop. She later advanced to second when Jamie LaBovick reached first behind her on a fielding error from UAB pitcher Amber Torres. Torres escaped further trouble by getting Samantha Pellechio to fly out and Chelsea Palumbo to popup to end the inning.
The Rams had another auspicious opportunity in the fourth when Nicole Callahan led off with a double. After the extra-base hit, Lauren Webster relieved Torres and got the next three batters without giving up a run. Webster would toss four innings of one-hit ball to record the win.
Plimpton only allowed five hits and one walk over her seven innings of work. She was touched up for two runs in the sixth though. After Caley Walden reached first on a fielder's choice, Catherine Douglass drove her in with an RBI double. Douglass advanced to third on the throw home to try and nab Walden. Kayla Orr followed Douglass with a squeeze bunt that went for a single. The Blazers pushed the only two runs of the game across for the 2-0 win.
Fordham finished the USF Tournament with a 3-2 record to improve its overall record to 4-5. After a short return to the Bronx, the softball Rams head back out to the Cathedral City Classic tournament in Cathedral City, California. They meet Texas on Thursday, February 24, at 8:30 P.M. Eastern in the first game. Also on the schedule for that tournament are Cal State Fullerton, LSU and Nevada.
