Fordham opened day two of the USF Tournament with a 2-0 victory over Indiana in a game played in Clearwater, Florida. The win is the second-straight for the Rams and Fordham now owns a 3-4 mark on the season.
The first two innings of the game were quiet, but the Hoosiers threatened in the top of the third with the bottom of their lineup. After the first batter flied out, ninth-place hitter, Samantha Heyman singled to shortstop. Leadoff hitter Breanna Saucedo followed with a base hit to left. The next batter executed a sacrifice bunt, and Indiana had runners on second and third with two outs.
Fordham starter Chelsea Plimpton was able to escape trouble though, by Cassie Gogreve to swing and miss on strike three. The Hoosiers stranded two in the inning.
The Rams didn't get a hit until the bottom of the fifth. In that frame, Becca Griswold walked and Meghan Shager came in to run for her. Lindsey Kay Bright followed with a walk which put runners on first and second for Jocelyn Dearborn. She singled to left, but Fordham failed to score as Shager was gunned down at home with the relay throw coming from Amanda Wagner at third base.
In the sixth, with Jen Mineau now in the circle, Indiana rallied once again. Saucedo led off with a base hit up the middle. Kelsey Stander followed with a bunt single down the third base line to put two runners on base. From there, Mineau struck out the next batter, retired the second out on the infield fly rule, and recorded the final out of the frame on a fly ball to left.
Fordham would score both of the games' runs in the sixth. Jamie LaBovick led off with a walk. Samantha Pellechio followed with a double to left-center. After a Beckah Wiggins strike out, Gabby Luety singled up the middle to score LaBovick and Pellechio. Luety got caught between first and second base and was out on the play.
Indiana got a single in the seventh but failed to score and the Rams won 2-0. Fordham now has a 3-4 record. Plimpton tossed four innings of shutout baseball to record her second win of the season. She struck out three and didn't walk anyone. Mineau pitched the final three frames to earn her first save of the year.
Game Two
Fordham faced #25 DePaul in its second game of the day. The Rams jumped on the Blue Demons immediately as Dearborn led off the game with a triple. LaBovick followed Dearborn with an RBI single plating her. Pellechio followed LaBovick and walked. Two batters later was Nicole Callahan. Callahan ripped a 2 RBI single that scored LaBovick and Pellechio. Fordham had a 3-0 lead after the first inning.
The Blue Demons got to Plimpton for a run in the second. Kirsten Verdun led off with a walk. She later came in to score on a single by Ali Warren. On that single, Brittney Yniguez, who followed Verdun with a walk, was thrown at home behind Verdun from Bright to Shager. The stood 3-1 after two.
In the bottom of the third, DePaul would push two runs across and tie the score at 3-3. Alex Morocco ripped a single to left field. The next batter was Bree Brown. Brown took Plimpton's offering over the wall for a two-run home run. Plimpton pitched four innings to record her second win of the afternoon.
Fordham broke the 3-3 stalemate in the top of the fifth as LaBovick reached on a fielder's choice and Pellechio followed with a single. Luety advanced both runners to second and third with an infield groundout, and for the second time in the game, Callahan ripped a clutch, 2 RBI hit to put Fordham in the lead 5-3. Jessica Richards, who re-entered after Chelsea Palumbo singled, scored on a wild pitch to make the score 6-3.
The Rams put the game away in the top of the seventh as they scored three more for the 9-3 win. After Fordham loaded the bases on two walks and a single, Jo Krasnisky got an RBI after getting hit by the pitch. Richards grounded out to scored the second run and Shager drove in the third by reaching on an error.
In the win, Callahan was 3-4 with 4 RBI and Dearborn was 4-4 with a run scored. Pellechio got a hit and scored three times. Wiggins and Bright both recorded stolen bases and Fordham scattered 14 hits.
The Rams conclude the USF Tournament on Sunday, February 20 with a game against Alabama-Birmingham at 10:30 A.M.
