Kingston, R.I. - The Fordham women's basketball team battled the University of Rhode Island on Wednesday night, and it was the Rams - the Bronx Rams - that prevailed, 64-43. Fordham improves to 11-16 overall, 3-8 in the A-10. Rhode Island is 7-18, 1-10 in the league.
Fordham won the opening tip and scored right away on a Kyara Weekes three-pointer twenty seconds into the contest. Rhode Island rattled off five straight points before an Alexandria Zamora jumper at 16:18 evened the score at 5-5. URI jumped ahead 9-5 until Tiffany Stokes scored four-straight points to bring the two teams level at 9-9 at 13:27. Rhode Island slowly built their lead back to seven when Sherrie Session hit a jumper at 5:10 to make the score 20-13.
From there, Weekes got the hot hand late in the half as she scored five straight points on a three-pointer and two foul shots. The three, at 3:08, gave Fordham a 20-19 lead and the Rams took a 26-24 lead into the halftime intermission.
After URI's Ajanae Boone hit a three-pointer to give URI a 27-26 lead, Fordham scored 15 unanswered to take a 41-27 lead. The highlight in that run was a Weekes three-pointer at 14:20 that just beat the shot clock. URI ended the run when Megan Shoniker hit a three-pointer at 12:05 to make the score 41-30.
Fordham answered on the next possession as Becky Peters made a three-point play to give Fordham a 44-30 lead. Rhode Island never threatened again and Fordham went on to win 64-43.
Kristina Bell, who celebrated her 22nd birthday on Tuesday night, frustrated Shoniker on the defensive end all night. She held the A-10's leading scorer (19.6) to just nine points on 4-14 shooting.
Weekes scored a career-high 21 in the win. Becky Peters posted a double-double with 14 points and 14 rebounds. Stokes finished with 12 points and eight rebounds.
Fordham returns to action on Saturday, February 19 when they welcome the St. Bonaventure Bonnies into the Rose Hill Gymnasium. The game, which begins at 1:00 P.M., is part of the `Pink Zone' initiative in conjunction with the WBCA and the Kay Yow Cancer Fund. Fans are encouraged to show their support for the Pink Zone by wearing pink on game day.
