The task of beating a top-ten team like the Xavier Musketeers seemed like a daunting one for the Fordham women's basketball team. But on Saturday, they showed their fight as they kept the game close and eventually fell to Xavier, 77-55 in a game played in Cincinnati, Ohio.
The game, part of the Jesuit Basketball Spotlight, began with Xavier jumping out to a 12-3 lead just 5:13 into the game. Arielle Collins had the early hand for the Rams, as she scored the first eight Fordham points, on two three-pointers and a driving layup, to make the score 12-8 at 13:47.
Xavier then went on a 10-0 run to take a 22-8 lead at 7:43, but Caitlin Shadbolt scored five-straight points for the Rams to bring then within nine, 22-13. Tiffany Stokes made a jumper and Becky Peters made a three-pointer at 4:40 to bring the Rams within four, 22-18. The Musketeers immediately responded as Amber Harris found Katie Rutan for a layup to make the score 24-18.
Less than a minute later, Kyara Weekes buried an open three-pointer and brought Fordham within three, at 24-21. From there, Xavier closed out the half with an 8-0 run to lead 32-21 at the break.
The second half opened with Xavier building a 16-point lead when Ta'Shia Phillips made a layup at 18:27. Fordham responded and a Stokes layup at 15:27 made the score, 42-31 for Musketeers. Fordham suffered through a 6:45 scoring drought before a Caitlin Shadbolt free throw made the score 73-45. From there Xavier went on to win 77-55.
Collins led the Rams with a career-high 20 points. Weekes also finished in double-figures with 11 points. Shadbolt chipped in with 10 points.
With the loss, Fordham is now 10-16 overall, 2-8 in the A-10. Xavier improves to 21-2 and 10-0. Fordham returns to action on Wednesday, February 16, as the team travels to Kingston, Rhode Island, to take on Atlantic 10 rival URI. The game begins at 7:00 P.M.
