Bronx, N.Y. -
On a non-descript day in December, the Fordham women's basketball team gave themselves a Christmas gift a week early as they shot 56.6% en route to a 76-53 win over Winthrop from the Rose Hill Gym on Saturday, December 17. Three Rams scored double figures led by Becky Peters' 21 points.
Fordham came out on fire as they opened up a 10-2 lead over the first four-and-a-half minutes of play. In that stretch, the Rams hit four of six shots with Charlotte Stoddart and Peters each scoring four points during that stretch.
From there, Fordham used an 8-2 run to take an 18-4 advantage at 12:29. The eight points came courtesy of three-pointers from Peters and Arielle Collins and a bucket from Cody Sims. The three-points were a pair of the 13 that the Rams made in the game, which tied a school record that was sent on January 29, 2011 at Duquesne.
Fordham stretched the lead to 17, at 30-13, on a three-pointer from Abigail Corning at the six minute mark. They then closed out the first half with a 15-4 run that gave them a 45-17 halftime lead. For the half, the Rams shot 59.4% (19-of-32), including 53.8% (7-of-13) from the three-point line. The team recorded 14 first-half assists to just 10 turnovers, as they utilized the extra pass to knock down several open looks.
The second half saw Fordham continue its' torrid shooting as they ripped off 6-of-9 shot attempts over the first 7:49 of the half to build a 37 point lead. The run was capped by a Collins' desperation toss that went off the glass to beat the shot clock and gave the Rams a 62-25 lead at the 12:11 mark.
Over the next five and a half minutes, Fordham pushed the lead to a game-high 38 points, when Stoddart nailed an open jumper at 6:39 to make the score 70-32.
The Eagles used an 11-2 run to get the score back to 72-43, capped by a Dequesha McClanahan layup at 3:21. The Rams emptied the bench in the final three minutes and scored a season-best 76 points, in the 76-53 victory.
