Orlando, Fla. - In just her second season with Fordham, Abigail Corninghad a game of a lifetime in the opening round of the UCF Thanksgiving Tournament on Friday, November 25, in Orlando, Florida, as she scored a career-high 29 points to help the Rams defeat the Knights 70-57. With the win, Fordham is now 3-1 on the season.
The host school jumped out to an 8-2 lead in the game until Corning buried a three-pointer and then added a layup in back-to-back possessions to bring Fordham within one, 8-7, at the 15:40 mark. After a three-point-play and a Meghan Keough layup gave UCF a 13-7 lead, Fordham roared back as Corning and Becky Peters hit consecutive shots at 13:04 and 12:16 and then a Christina Gaskin jumper just inside the 10-minute mark evened the score at 13-13.
Eight straight Fordham points on a jumper from Gaskin and three-pointers from Arielle Collins and Liz Milner, put the Rams up eight, 21-13, before the Knights used a 10-2 run over the next three minutes to tie the game at 23.
Fordham grabbed a 25-23 advantage when Corning scored off a no-look pass from Collins and the Rams then used the final 2:53 to build an eight-point halftime advantage, 35-27, with all the points came from Gaskin and Corning.
The second half saw the Rams slowly build their lead, eventually taking a game-high 19 point advantage, 60-41, when Peters hit a pair of free throws at 8:41. Fordham put the game away when Peters drove through the paint and hit a spinning layup at 3:43 to make the score 66-50.
The Rams will conclude the UCF Thanksgiving Tournament with a game against TCU on Saturday, November 26, at noon. TCU lost to Hartford in the first game on Friday.
Corning finished with a career-high 29 points. Peters and Gaskin also netted double-figures, with 15 and 10 points, respectively. Collins totaled nine points and a game-high six assists as the Rams shot 50.0% from the field for the first time this season.
Game Notes: Abigail Corning shot a career-high 73.3% from the field (11-of-15) and made all three of her three-point attempts... Christina Gaskin recorded the first double-double of the season with 10 points and 12 rebounds...As a team, Fordham outrebounded UCF 36-25, marking the third game that the Rams grabbed more boards than their opponent...Fordham shot 87.5% from the charity stripe...The Rams held UCF scoreless over a 6:18 stretch in the first half.
