Women's Basketball Improves to 2-1 with 54-43 Win at Holy Cross

Worcester, Mas. - Though Fordham has only beaten Holy Cross a total of eight times in their storied rivalry, the Rams can now lay claim to wins in the past two meetings with a 54-43 victory today in the Hart Center. Abigail Corning led a balanced scoring attack for the Rams with a game-high 14 points.

The game began eerily similar to the Cleveland State game, Fordham came out on fire hitting perimeter shots and distributing the ball to different players, opening up a 16-6 lead in the first half as Christina Gaskin nailed a three-pointer and Charlotte Stoddart followed up with a basket.

With Fordham leading 5-2, Holy Cross used a pair of buckets from Alex Smith and Emily Parker to take a 6-5 lead. From there, the Rams rattled off eleven straight points to lead 16-6 with Becky Peters and Corning teaming to score all eleven points in the run.

Another Gaskin three with 10:43 left in the half gave the Rams' their largest lead of the half, 20-8, but then the Crusaders closed out the half with a 13-5 run of their own to get within four, 25-21, when Amy Lepley scored two of her 14 points with seven seconds left in the half.

The second half began with both sides keeping the score close early on. With Fordham leading 30-27, Arielle Collins scored eight straight points for the Rams on back-to-back three-pointers and a jumper to give Fordham a 38-29 lead at 12:26.

From there, Fordham turned up the defense and held Holy Cross scoreless over a 5:30 stretch during which the Rams took their largest lead of the game, 43-29, on another three-pointer from Collins at 9:36.

The Crusaders countered once again and got as close as five, at 48-43, when Smith hit a three-pointer at 4:21 but Fordham outscored Holy Cross 6-0 over the final four minutes to earn the 54-43 victory.

Corning led the team in scoring with 14 points while Collins added 13 and Peters finished with eleven, Gaskin chipped in with 10 points while Cody Sims had a game-high three blocks.

With the win, Fordham improves to 2-1 on the year. They return to action on Friday, November 25, when the face Central Florida at 2:30 p.m. in the UCF Classic from Orlando, Florida.

Game Notes: Fordham had four players score in double figures...Abigail Corning led the team in scoring for the third-straight game...She also reached double-figures in scoring for the third consecutive matchup...The Rams were out-rebounded for the first time this season...Fordham shot 10-for-24 from behind the arc (41.7%)...Fordham held Holy Cross to shooting just 31.0% from the field (18-58), including 25.0% (4-16) from behind the three-point line.
