It was a roller coaster ride of emotions and volleyball play at the Rose Hill Gym, as Fordham and Duquesne went the distance and then some on Saturday night. In the end, the Dukes snuck away with a five-set win by scores of 22-25, 25-17, 25-23, 23-25, and 19-17.
With the loss, Fordham falls to 5-14 overall, 2-3 in the Atlantic 10, while Duquesne improved to 13-7 on the year, 3-3 in the league.
The wild affair began with a three-point win by Fordham, led by Lisa Hipp's four kills and three digs. The Rams hit .256 in the set, while holding the Dukes to a .175 clip.
Duquesne stormed back in set two, winning the set by eight points. The Dukes posted four team blocks, and held Fordham to a .051 hitting percentage.
Set three continued the tight play with the score tied at 22, with Duquesne earning the advantage at 23-22 on a service ace from Taylor Jones. After a kill by Krissy Buongiorno tied the score, Sara Scheirman recorded a kill to give Duquesne a set point at 24-23. Buongiorno tried to respond again for Fordham, but her next attack went long, putting the Dukes ahead two set to one.
Fordham rallied back in set four to force the decisive fifth set. With the score knotted at 18, Fordham picked up two points on a kill by Hipp and a Duquesne attack error. A long run of side outs eventually put the score at 24-23 with Fordham having set point. Similar to set three, it was an attack error that gave Fordham the final point to force the fifth set.
In the fifth set, both squads foiled two match points for the other side, leaving the score tied at 17 all. Duquesne then recorded a block and got a Fordham attack error to score the final two points of the set and win the match at 19-17.
For Fordham, Megan Arend posted a career-high 28 digs to go with three assists, while Brittany Daulton (10 kills, 13 digs, four blocks), Lisa Hipp (15 kills, 14 digs, five blocks), and Sara Konkel (three kills, 25 assists, 13 digs) all recorded double-doubles. Buongiorno chipped in eight kills and nine blocks with Randi Ewing having nine kills and four blocks. Mary Diamantidis just missed a double-double with 20 assists and eight digs with Rose Diaz-Vazquez finishing with seven kills.
The Fordham volleyball team will next be in action on Tuesday, October 11th, when the Rams travel to Storrs, Connecticut, for their final non-conference match of the season, which will be a 7:00 PM match against the Connecticut Huskies.
