Water Polo Opens West Coast Swing With Losses to Vanguard and #16 Cal Baptist

Riverside, Calif. - The Fordham water polo team began their annual west coast trip to California on Thursday with a pair of matches held at Cal Baptist University in Riverside, California. The Rams were not greeted kindly, falling to Vanguard, 8-5, in match one, and to #16 Cal Baptist, 17-7, in match two.

With the pair of losses, Fordham falls to 5-11 on the year.

In the opening match of the day, Vanguard's Michael Cobarrubias scored three times, while Christian Carillo made seven saves as the Lions topped the Rams, 8-5.

Vanguard had the advantage through the first half, leading 5-1 at the break. Fordham though would not go away quietly in the third quarter, scoring four goals to pull within one, 6-5, by the end of the third period. Nicholas Allen netted two early tallies in the period followed by a Ben Clinkinbeard goal and a Dan Kearney tally with just 0.6 seconds left.

Vanguard however scored twice in the fourth quarter to seal up an 8-5 victory.

Allen led the way for Fordham with two goals, while Clinkinbeard, J.D. Shrewsbury, and Kearney had the other three goals. In net, Noah Le Beau had seven saves.

In game two, the 16th-ranked Cal Baptist Lancers got a game-high five goals from Scott Gleason to earn a 17-7 victory over the Rams.

The Lancers jetted out to a 4-1 lead after the first quarter, and extended their edge to 9-4 at the half. Cal Baptist finished off the game with an 8-3 scoring edge in the second half for the 17-7 final score.

For Fordham, Robert Fleming, Andrew McKernin, and Josh Itano each had two goals apiece with Allen adding the final tally. In net, Christian Flessner ended the match with eight saves.

The Fordham water polo team continues its west coast trip at the Claremont Convergence Tournament on Friday. The Rams meet La Verne at 2:20 PM Eastern and Occidental at 6:20 PM Eastern.
