Minus two starters due to injuries and then losing a third during the match, things didn't look good for the Fordham volleyball team on Friday, as they took on Saint Louis, a team the Rams had never beaten in ten previous meetings. That is until tonight, as the Rams stunned the Billikens in five sets to snap an eight-match losing streak. Final set scores were 26-24, 16-25, 16-25, 25-23, and 15-12.
With the win, Fordham improved to 6-19 overall, 3-7 in the Atlantic 10, while Saint Louis fell to 11-9 on the year, 7-3 in the league.
In the opening set, Saint Louis rallied from large deficits to post set point at 24-23. The Rams did not give up, scoring the next three points to win the set, 26-24.
The Billikens won the next two sets by identical 25-16 scores, before Fordham rallied back for a 25-23 win in set four.
In the decisive fifth set, Fordham quickly got out to a 4-1 lead, and held that three-point edge until earning match point at 14-11. The Billikens fought off the first match point, but Brittany Daulton scored her final kill of the match to win it for Fordham at 15-12.
For Fordham, Daulton finished with a team-high 15 kills and 12 digs, while Kim Capicotto had eight kills and 11 digs. Randi Ewing set her career-high with 11 blocks to go with three kills, while Rose Diaz-Vazquez added eight kills and six blocks. Mary Diamantidis dished out 27 assists to go with seven digs, while Sara Konkel had seven assists and three digs before leaving the match with an injury.
The Fordham volleyball team will next be in action on Sunday, October 30th, when the Rams play at Duquesne, beginning at 1:00 PM.
