Despite a season-high nine saves from Fordham goalkeeper Rachel Suther, the Fordham women's soccer team dropped a 2-0 decision to the Massachusetts Minutewomen at Rudd Field in Amherst, Massachusetts.
With the loss, Fordham goes to 7-6-2 overall, 2-2-1 in the Atlantic 10, while Massachusetts improved to 9-2-2 on the year, 3-0-1 in the league.
UMass picked up the early 1-0 lead in the 11th minute, when Moa Mattsson sent in a cross from the right side. The pass connected with Tori Sousa, who scored her first goal of the season on a diving header.
The Minutewomen kept the pressure on the Fordham defense with goalkeeper Rachel Suther holding off a second goal with four first half saves. Suther's counterpart Emily Cota also saw plenty of action, making three saves, including one in the waning seconds on Fordham's Kristina Maksuti.
In the second half, Fordham's Michaela Murphy had the first scoring chance, but her shot in the 50th minute was stopped on a defender save.
Then, the Minutewomen extended their lead to 2-0 in the 54th minute. Off a corner kick, Massachusetts put two shots in on net that were blocked, but the third shot by Meghan Collins, was tapped in over the goal line for her second goal of the year.
Fordham was kept off the board the rest of the way, as Cota posted three more saves for the shutout. Suther ended the match with a season-high nine saves, while Annie Worden and Maria Lorena Canicatti had three shots each to lead the Rams' attack.
The Fordham women's soccer team will next be in action on Sunday, October 16th, when the Rams play at Rhode Island, beginning at 1:00 PM.
