Washington, D.C. - Oct. 14, 2011 - George Washington had five players post a .360 hitting percentage or better, while hitting .367 as a team, as the Colonials swept a three-set volleyball match from the Fordham Rams at the Smith Center in Washington, D.C. Final set scores were 25-16, 25-23, and 25-17.
With the loss, Fordham falls to 5-16 overall, 2-4 in the Atlantic 10, while George Washington improved to 14-6 on the year, 3-3 in the league.
The Colonials started strong in a nine-point first set win. George Washington hit .567 for the set, connecting for 18 kills to just one error, which included seven kills by Lauren Whyte.
Set two went down to the wire with Fordham tying the score at 23 on a solo block by Lisa Hipp. George Washington then earned set point on a kill by Whyte and captured the set on a Fordham attack error.
Set three was tied at 11 all before a 9-3 push by the Colonials gave George Washington control of the third set, winning it eventually by eight.
For Fordham, Hipp totaled a team-high 10 kills to go with five digs, while Brittany Daulton had eight kills and seven digs. Maria Rodenberg also had a team-high 11 digs.
George Washington was led by Whyte, who finished with 16 kills and eight digs, while Kelsey Newman added 12 kills.
The Fordham volleyball team will next be in action on Sunday, October 16th, when the Rams play at Charlotte, beginning at 1:00 PM.
